Myself and my husband would like to come to Costa Rica next January-March and would like to find reasonable rent within walking to the water on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.
We would like to spend a few Months so we can look to see where we may like to buy property down there the following year.
We don’t really want to rent a place that is renting by the week and charging a small fortune.
Any ideas??
Thanks, Pam

Rents obviously vary widely and the Realtors we recommend normally do a great job but for obvious reasons they typically represent the higher end homes and apartments.
Craigslist “may” work but I’ve heard more than a few negative stories and booking anything online without knowing the area well could be a big mistake.
If I were you I would stay in reputable, well established hotel or B&B for a couple of weeks to get acclimatized and during that time, take a good walk around the neighbourhood and you’ll probably find lots of places “For Rent” where you can ask and negotiate the best deal for yourselves…
Ask in your favourite restaurants! Look at the bulletin boards in the supermarkets!

My wife and I are doing a similar tour this year, we were in CR Feb-early March and are coming back for 2 more months this summer to relook at some areas and find new ones.
Even if you are a beachy type person, you will no doubt want to look at other areas and by residing on one or the other shores of the country, you will be making your exploratory trips more than a bit longer. Might I SUGGEST thinking about locating more centrally, where you will pay less and have a better option to transport yourself around the country will less drive from point A to point B. I think you would find you could stay in the Central Valley and rent for your term, still do your beach tours, stay in some areas and probably spend less overall than if you just rented in a beachy setting. Keep in mind distance and travel time are two separate issues in Costa Rica. Having that home base is a really nice thing in country and it’s easier to explore that way.
Best wishes for a great visit. Just let the country talk to you, as it will!May 10, 2013 at 5:50 pm #169680jreevesMemberI have neighbors who use VRBO to advertise their properties as vacation rentals. I think there are some safety features built into booking through VRBO. Some people will only have a nightly or weekly rental rate but you can contact them to negotiate longer term if they’re interested. I have some neighbors who prefer short term, others who will only rent long term. Just keep in mind that electricity costs are very high for anything with AC so long term rentals will almost always have you pay your utilities separately from the rent payment.
Good luck!
