My husband & I are very serious about moving to CR & have already done several months of effort in that direction. He has mild Parkinson’s & mentioned this morning that he’s concerned he’ll be refused residency based on his illness. Before we go through the expense of application, does anyone have experience with what situations have prevented people from getting this kind of residency? My husband retired medically from law enforcement & isn’t the kind of guy who would want to take frequent 3-day Panamanian vacations. Also, what’s a reasonable lawyer’s fee for doing the residency footwork? We have a quote of $4500 plus another $800-1,000 out of pocket. Don’t want to spend TOO much of our ‘look-around time screening lawyers. We’ll have a month there soon & want to concentrate on the other 62.5 things on our list…:?:

No health status documentation or physical exam is included in the application proces.
As you probably know, as a legal resident here you will be required to enroll in the CAJA national medical care system and the CAJA does not exclude enrollees or deny treatment based upon pre-existing conditions. So I wouldn’t let this worry me if I were you.
As to the attorney, $4,500 plus another $800 – $1,000 seems very rich to me. There may be a Costa Rican residency specialist recommended on this website. Maybe a message to Scott Oliver, our Dear Leader, would get you a referral. If not, pose that question in a private message and I’ll give you an excellent lead.

WeLoveCostaRica.comAugust 4, 2010 at 3:54 pm #162681costaricafincaParticipantPlease, wait and DO not apply for Pensionado status until you have made a few trips here. Also check on the availability of the medications required.
While being denied Pensionado status due to pre-existing health conditions is highly unlikely, it may make health insurance with INS a problem, since they do not cover most pre-existing conditions. CAJA has no such rules.
My father suffered with Parkinson’s for many years, so am familiar with his condition.
I would advise using the lawyers associated with ARCRAugust 4, 2010 at 4:21 pm #162682grb1063MemberTake Scott’s advice on the attorneys. Rick, Roger & Javier are the best you can get and David is right about the charges you have incurred….mi dios!!

WeLoveCostaRica.com
You couldn’t ask for better treatment than from Lic. Romulo Pacheco whose office is upstairs from ARCR’s in Casa Canada in Sabana Park. He and his staff will walk you through the entire process and make it as painless as you could hope for.
Sr. Pacheco’s phone number is: 506-2255-1592. His e-mail address is: romulo@residencycr.com. In the subject line of your e-mail, please put “Costa Rica Residency” so that he won’t mistake it for spam.
And please mention my name. I get a c5 referral fee.
August 5, 2010 at 11:31 pm #162684waggoner41MemberMy wife has fibromyalgoa and diabetes among other medical issues. Questions regarding medical condition were not asked by Migracion.
I’m the one who had issues regarding Migracion and I am in great health. It took 27 months to finally get approval with the file being sent to the diractor of Migracion 3 times.
As to an attotney, I had great service in dealing with everything through Garland Baker’s office (506) 2256-8585. Many people recommend ARCR for assistance but I found answers to all my questions from Garland’s office. The attorney’s name is Barbara Jimenez Coble and with all the extra work the final cost was $2000.
I went through two attornies before I found one who actually did the work. The first did not even submit two documents for us that needed additional approval in the States and the other kept trying to nickel and dime us for phantom work.
A word of caution: Make sure that your documents comply exactly with everything the consulate tells you.
Particularly make sure that your police report is no more than 3 months old when you turn them in to Migracion. Before you submit to Migracion you must have entered the Caja (National medical system). There were no questions asked regarding pre-existing conditions to apply for the Caja. Required documents for Caja are application for the medical number at the local clinic (took 8 days), passport and a copy of the electric bill for the location where you are staying.

Hi David, WOW a whole 5c good deal. I am paying my attorney $600 and then the other fees that we all have to pay to the other Gov Depts here. Plus I only paid half down and the other half not until I recieve my cedula. In fact we are going to Immigration this month to check on the paperwork, and she seems to think that I will be getting my cedula this year. And since my package was not really COMPLETE until a few months ago that would make for a good turn around time. Ron USCG Ret
