As as a private citizen you don’t the ability to get away from the control of the United States period, the IRS will always be waiting.
But if you are a corporation in the United States like say Burger King, you can cease to be an US corporation, change your tax relationship with our national legal system, and live happily ever after as a citizen of Canada!
We Americans are now in the period of our history where corporations our our most important class of citizenship, our 1% ruling oligarch has the complete tax breaks and the rest of us of 99% of citizens are suspect by the first two.
What President Nixon tried to do the Constitution behind White House Watergate closed doors, President Bush Jr did in the his Patriot Act in the name of defense of the realm” with one swipe of his pen! Now we are free of terrorists thus far, but the majority majority of us citizens are not free of the political system setup to defend the “fatherland” through our finances.
Again no need to make it illegal since you can never get rid of the IRS in your life even after you are six feet under!

Part of the issue is that it is not 2000 that gave up US citizenship in 2013 it was more than 50,000 only the 2,000 counted had net worth of over 653K and had to pay a monster exit tax. Germany just before WW2 charged Jews 90% tax on current wealth and estimated earnings had they stated 1 more year. USA is headed in this direction… in past 5 years we have gone from $0.00 to $453 and now to over 2K plus the amount of exit tax has increased along the way. Literally NO other country in modern times has this amount of exit tax except the USA and Germany back in the late 1930’s.. Recall USA for the past 100 years was the place everyone wanted to live… amazing how quickly things change
does anyone know how much it cost to renounce costa rican citizenship.. just curious 🙂

Sad to see where the US is going. Question: you mentioned 653K, is that a new exit penalty threshold?
I had thought it was 2m from my readings.

no the $653000 threshold is for making the expat list.. if your worth more than that you make the list public..
if you make less.. you don’t make that list
so even though it states 2000 people renouced citizenship.. its more like 50,000
lets hear from sweikert on this?? I guess all people that want to renounce their citizenship.. are all crooks and tax dodgers.. or even worse un patriotic
