Hi there, in March I will be in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and will have a rental car. Does anyone know if I can bring the rental car into Costa Rica?
I can’t answer your question directly, but I do know that taking any car across the borders (between Nicaragua and Costa Rica or Costa Rica and Panama) requires special documentation. I’d be surprised to learn that the rental company would agree to this and, as the owners of the car, they’d be the ones to obtain those documents.
Be sure to check with the rental company first.
The rental car companies in CR will not allow entry into Nicaragua. What they will do is pre-arrange an exchange of cars at the border. I asked the question on one of our trips and that is what I was told. I do not know if it works the same in reverse, but would surmise it does. However, with Ortega in power and the recent incident with an american falsely imprisoned for murder, I am reluctant to set foot in Nicaragua.
Whatever you do grifz77, make sure you ask your car rental place, both the CR and the Nicaragua gov’t sides because you don’t want to be stuck on either end based on information only one side gave you and be prepared to wait at the border.
Here’s some general info for car entry (Nicaragua/CR border) and docs you need for it:
