We have been renting from Dean’s renta4x4incostarica for 5 or more years, sometimes twice a year, and have never had a bad experience yet. This time we are renting for 5 months – find it much easier than owing a vehicle.

happygirl — approximately how much will you be paying for 5 month’s rental. And you say you find it much easier than owning a vehicle. Can you give me the reasons why?
    thanks.

Dean and his crew are the greatest. I have rented twice from them and they always have been willing to meet up with in the San Jose area. Both times I have had they come to my favorite little bed and breakfast in Alajuela, the Hotel Villa Bonita. The exit at the airport is to crazy for me to deal with hunting down my rental car, also I have flown over night and don’t want to drive into town! So I have the Bonita send a taxi, I go and check in, take a nap and have Dean’s crew delivered by Tracker by 5 PM. Normally I can park off the street in the evenings and the next morning after my Pinto Gallo and eggs, I head out for Orosi! They are a great group and I love the Tracker I get to drive!

    Tom in Portland Oregon!

We rent because at the present time we are unable to be in Costa Rica permanently, and it saves us the hassle of owning a vehicle. Having said that, we do have friends who visit for 6 months and they bought a car and store it with friends they have in CR. An arrangement they are very happy with. As for rental rates, they are posted on the web page. I think $39 a day for high season.

Yes, they will deliver the vehicle to the airport in SJ. Dean’s employee meets you at the airport once you have informed him of your flight arrival time, with a sign with your first and last name. Dean has great employees who speak English and handle the transation right there at the airport and will also show you how the vehicle works, the 4×4, etc….

Once we requested and Dean had the vehicle delivered to us at the Liberia airport,….but naturally there was a fee involved for that. So plan accordingly with Dean in advance and he will accomodate your needs.

    Is Dean still in business?
In the past few weeks I’ve e-mailed him, then e-mailed using the form, and yesterday left a message on his phone…still no reply.
Has anyone been in contact with him lately?

    happygirl,
I have some property in Guanacaste and hope to finally relocate within the next 18-24 months. I share a vehicle with 3 other persons who travel back and forth to Cr and I have rented from Vamos 4X4 before.
You mention that you are renting for 5 months better than buying a car. Can you be more specific as I would be purchasing my own vehicle as soon as I relocate.
Thanks in advance for you anticipated assistance

Be careful about relying upon a gold or platinum credit card for your insurance.

First, my Gold AMEX does not cover every major agency. Only 3 are covered. I believe Hertz, Avis, and Budget. I only found out about this after making a reservation with Dollar, and then confirming with AMEX afterward. I could have cancelled and reserved with one of the “big three” but now the rental rates for my time period have increased 250%+. It will be cheaper to add insurance than change agencies. They quoted about 12-14 USD per day.

The other issue I found renting in Detroit. The collision was covered, but many companies include a “loss of use” clause that will charge you the car’s daily rental rate during the period of time the car is under repair. This was not covered by my credit card at the time, and it become a big number quickly. Luckily my company reimbursed me on expense, but recreational travelers won’t have that option. I don’t know if this is an issue in CR, but one should ask questions in advance.
