We, my wife and I, want to retire to Costa Rica. What is meant by a ‘police report’ and how far back must it be for? I have had a ‘public trust’ government background check for a job I had in the defense industry. Does that count? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx.it has to be a recent local police report and it is only good for 90 days, i think. used to be 6 months, but the requirements changed. it has to be notarized and apostilled. then when you are here, you will be fingerprinted and an Interpol background check will be done. i know someone whose residency was denied because something that happened 40 years ago showed up on the interpol report, so this is thorough. you can’t run and you can’t hide. jejeje so basically you go to your local police station and they do the check, write a letter saying you have no criminal record, which they notarize. the apostille is done by the sec of state. timing is everything on this report because of its expiration date.
My local police station did not have a way to give me a notorized document since they did not have a notary on staff. I had to go online and order a state police report that was notorized. Since I live in Florida, I was even able to get the document in Spanish which saved me the cost of having it translated in Costa Rica. It still had to be sent to the state department to be apostilled and then to the CR embassy for authetication.
