[size=200]Hello – Hola! I spent almost 5 yrs in CR -went to Colegio St Claire and Lincoln High – absolutely LOVED my time there – cried when I left –

Went back for a quick visit in about 1976 ? Am planning a trip for mid Oct with a friend – want to spend time in the Central Valley and revisit some old stomping grounds in surrounding areas -won’t have time to go too far afield – I have just signed on to “We Love CR” and am excited to see if I can get any up-dated info

Is the Costa Rica Country Club still in Escazu? Could I go for lunch w/friends w/o being a member?

We are planning on spending 2 nites at Arenal (hope it is erupting!) How bad is the rainy season at this time? Isn’t it winding down?

We would like to do Sarchi and Cartago and other places sort of near the Central Valley –

Any suggestions/comments/ideas would be happily received!! Gracias – “Murph” Barbara Murphy-Haynes

Chances are, you will be disappointed with the changes that have taken place. Although some of these changes have made life easier for those who now call Costa Rica, home.
You will be flabbergasted at the costs compared to even your last trip.
The Arenal volcano is not into performing these days…

The way the human brain works, I would suggest that anybody would be disappointed at the state of any country after being away for 37 years.

If you think about it, we are always “learning” the past and not the present…

We grow up learning from books that were written in the past and as young children we are believing that this applies to the present when it often does not…

We listen and learn from our parents and teachers who are speaking about their experiences in the past which is often relevant but many times, it is not.

The last time I visited London, I felt like a Caucasion invader in a city I used to know fairly well as a young man…

Although London is still a magnificent city in many ways, I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

The Escazu Country Club is certainly still in operation. I am not honestly sure if you can have lunch there without being the guest of a member but you can ask… Their website is at [ http://www.elcountry.cr/ ] Telephone numbers 506 2208-5020 o 506 2208-5070

As CostaRicaFinca pointed out Arenal has been very passive recently so it’s unlikely you’ll see any “action.”

Best wishes for a memorable trip back to Costa Rica.

Thank you for your compliment but I have to tell you the last time I was in Greece (when I was blond haired young man of about 15) the Greek men seemed to like the looks of me a lot more than I wanted them to. 🙄 Yeek!

Although I did meet some lovely Greek gals when I was stationed in Cyprus 🙂

I have been battling a serious muscle disorder for the last 18 months so keeping in shape has become ridiculously painful for me but I keep trying …

Here in the interior of Guanacaste and at the beach, it has been a very wet rainy season so far. It is raining as I write this post with thunder in the distance 😮

I would say that changes do not necessarily have to be disappointing. I have been here for over 21 years and went back to Germany only once, 10 years ago. I have seen the changes of both countries but I have not been disappointed in any way. The only thing I could complain about in C.R. is the steep increase of cost of living which gives the name “Switzerland of Central America” even more sense. And off course, 21 years ago C.R. was kind of a “cowboy” country and horses were just a cheap version of a 4×4 vehicle, now people drive Prados instead of old land rovers, teenagers are on scateboards while their grandfathers still try to conserve the culture of topes, bullriding and rancheras. A positive change in my opinion is the modern role of women in latin society and the decreasing “machismo”.
