One of those tools has been capitalism.
Other effective tools of enslavement are religion, a fractional banking system and state capitalism calling itself communism. These tools only work with an ignorant, brainwashed population so perhaps I should add that a dumbed down educational system is a most effective tool as well.
I am used to seeing hypocrisy on the right. I am sure there is some on the left as well. But it does bother me to hear conservative and/or libertarian American expats bashing socialism from their new Costa Rican home. It is either hypocrisy or ignorance. Either way, it is a bit of an embarrassment for me since I am an American as well.
When is a politician lying: when they are moving their lips! America is screwed, as long as it only has a two party system! It amazes me that people vote for a politician, against their own interests. Americans never think outside of the box, or exercise any critical thinking.

If everyone who has a criticism of the US were to leave, only the brainwashed, terminally stupid, flag waving, bible thumping patriots would be left…and it wouldn’t change a thing. The US would continue its juggernaut to collapse as per plan.
I think I’ll turn the “love America or leave it” slogan back around on all those reactionary, conservative, “patriotic” expats and instruct them to “Don’t leave America in the first place if you love it. Go back home”. The last thing Costa Rica needs is a bunch of “ugly Americans” down here with their American exceptionalism attitude. It leaves a bad taste in the mouths of the indigenous and gives the rest of our countrymen a bad name. We are not all wrong minded, right wing, sycophants to a US government which has bullied its way across the planet.

the only people that are dying to get into the U.S. are the less fortunate people.. people that really have nothing.
and the people that are migrating away from the US are the educated somewhat more affluent people. NOT rich.. just alittle more affluent.
costa ricans are very happy here and go visit the us for to visit

aside from being taxed to death all my working life.. do you really think I or I would send one of my children to go and fight in someone’s war?? to become some fodder because some bureaucrat decided that there are weapons of mass destruction someplace so we need to go and invade.

spoken like a true right winger. you can’t even concede that the war in Iraq was started on a false premise and that hundreds of thousands of innocent people died because of that lie? at least mr. Smelly makes some cogent points. war for the sake of war is evil and sending your innocent children (rich children don’t go to war!) to die for a lie is a form of insanity. and that is one of the main reasons i chose costa rica — there is no Army, Costa Rica is not going to invade some country they’ve decided is out of favor, and they do not spend trillions of dollars funding the war machine so people like Donnie Rumsfeld can make a truckload of money on his Haliburton stock. the US could fix the debt in a heartbeat if they just stopped funding the perpetual wars we start.

Vietnam was another war based on a lie. Read the newly declassified CIA documents that basically call out all the lies the Admin was told by the war mongers Kissinger and the Pentagon. 50,000 of our troops dead and 3,000,000 vietnamese. yes, we have a wonderful war leacy and it has to stop.

I never forget when 911 happened ( lets not get started on this) but I lived in NY at the time
and a large majority of Pakistans or muslums owed gas stations..and 7 elevens and all the misplaced anger and violence towards these people… even though they had nothing do to with anything except by chance fit a certain superficial profile.

He supports marijuana legalization, he cannot be that bad! Hundreds of thousands of disabled veterans are forced into a criminal activity; buying illegal marijuana, to help ease their service-connected disabilities. I am neither a republican or democrate. Anyone with two brain cells, and the ability to do some simple research; will also be aware that the American “War Against Drugs” the last 111 years, is based on racism, Mexicans and introduction of marijuana into the U.S. Unfortunately, most Americans cannot or will not think outside the box. America is like the Titanic, and the U.S. politicians are merely rearranging the deck chairs.
Let’s take this a step further. I do NOT respect soldiers and I especially do not respect the ones who believe in what they are doing because they are the worst kind. What they are doing is murdering and maiming. Ultimately, they don’t protect anyone. They always end up doing exactly the opposite. I don’t give a damn about the reasons as to why they are doing it. You have to be stupid, evil or naive to put on a uniform and kill for any government.
The one thing I MOST respect about Costa Rica, and I really mean this, is that this country maintains no army. It is even more meaningful to me in that Costa Rica went through a demilitarization process to achieve eliminating armed services. That means the people considered the question and concluded democratically to do away with this evil. That takes brains and balls and a level of societal maturity unique for such a small and such a young country. They effectively negotiated themselves into a peaceful arrangement with neighbors while having no army to back them up thereby showing the rest o the planet HOW IT IS DONE.
