I’ve been living in CR for a year now, but am still waiting on residency (pensionado). I just went to the States for a visit and bought a one-way ticket back to CR so that my future trips would originate from here. Frontier Air made me buy return trip tickets within 90 days, saying CR wouldn’t let me in without one. Has anybody heard of this? What if I planned to leave by bus or car? Now, I’ll be charged for changing the return flight dates as I do not plan to return to the US in 90 days.

Frontier Air has to sell you a roundtrip but you are not obligated to use the return flight.

There are ways around this – like buying an open ended bus ticket to Nicaragua – but as far as I know you cannot fly to Costa Rica one way any other way. We tried this before we had our cedula, with just our residency resolution, & the airlines wouldn’t accept it.

If you are leaving the US on a one-way ticket to Costa Rica, then you need to show them you have a way out of Costa Rica (like with a bus ticket) after 90 days or you will be required to buy a round trip ticket.

We had a similar experience with Continental airlines, but the agent was very good and got us a good price for another ticket, then told us that we could cancel it when we arrived in San Jose, which we did.July 10, 2009 at 12:33 pm #196327kennedParticipantMy husband, son and I all left Costa Rica in May. Three different directions three and different airlines. My husbands ticket was roundtrip from and then back to CR. My son left and then returned with a one way ticket from Dallas to Costa Rica. No one questioned either one of them. No problems at all. But AA wanted me to buy a return ticket. I got by because of a reservation in November. More than three months, but they said there were ways to extend stays, so they let me on. I thought it was funny that they had no problem selling me the round trip ticket from and back to CR. Guess it all depends on every ones mood.
