I have done searches on real estate in the San Carlos area on this site but have found little info. My wife is from the Ciudad Quesada/Florencia area, and we are looking into buying a mid-sized lot to build a “getaway” and eventual retirement house on. Can anyone estimate a price in the area with a local negociating for us?
If your wife is a Tica, you would probably be much better off visiting the area for a decent period of time and having your Spanish speaking wife take a good look around.
I would suggest that:
1: Your wife’s family here in Costa Rica do the preliminary legwork for you. Basic investigation to see what’s available and who exactly you should talk to and then
2: You guys fly to Costa Rica and whittle down that selection further until you find something you like and
3: Make sure that this area really does have everything you need and then …
4: Hire an attorney to do a title search and then “if” all is well
5: Make an offer.
Unfortunately, if it’s just a “mid-sized lot” that you’re interested in at this stage, most real estate agents won’t have the time to help you.

Scott, Thanks for your reply.
My wife is infact a Tica, and I lived in the area for about 1 year in total in the last 3 years while working. At that time I was not looking into purchasing land, but my wife is now wanting to purchase. I had previously started to do just as you have suggested.
1. My father in law has found some land near Santa Rita for a good price and has sent me photos.
2. We are positive that we want to purchase in the general area near Florencia, Platanar, Santa Clara and Javillos.
3. Being married to a Tica and having lived there who I am accustomed to the food, culture, and location.
4. This I have yet to start this, I have a personal friend who is a judge, is this a process that he may be able to do?
5. I’m sure that cash talks louder right?
In general I would be curious as if anyone has purchased land (w/ or w/o casa) in this general area, and if so what the costs were.
