Can anyone recommend a nice safe downtown hotel?
If you would prefer to be in a small, luxurious hotel in San José, please see the Hotel Grano de Oro (grain of gold – coffee bean) which is on calle 30 between avenidas 2 & 4.
The rooms are gorgeous, the garden restaurant is delightful (and all proceeds from the restaurant go to charity), the ambience is excellent, the food is good and the service is great!

I stayed at the Hotel Presidente recently, rooms were nice and start @85.00 per night. Great place to people watch as it is right on Central Ave. and they, have open air restauraunt right on the corner. I have also stayed at the Holiday Inn, about 2-3 blocks from Presidente, which was pretty good also.
I have stayed at the Gran Hotel several times and have had no problems at all. The rooms are ample, I would recommend rooms #238, #338 or #438. These rooms are in the front of the hotel overlooking the National Theater, what a spectacular building. You can’t any more central than this. They have an excellent restaurant and the best Beer that I have found in all of CR. Have a look at: http://www.grandhotelcostarica.com/
Thank you all for your suggestions.
More affordable and equally clean and appointed with restaurant and pool with jacuzzi is the Hotel Santo Tomas. http://www.hotelsantotomas.com/
Is the the Hotel Grano de Oro right downtown?
Thanks
It’s just off Paseo Colón… Closer to Parque La Sabana than downtown

We stay in a nice hotel downtown called “Hotel Balmoral” It is safe, clean and right on Central Ave. in the middle of downtown…Plenty of shops, restaurants etc. within feet of the hotel…No cars on the street in front of the hotel, foot traffic only.
