Scott – My experience with this bank was equally idiotic. (https://www.welovecostarica.com/public/235.cfm) I closed my account after becoming completely frustrated with their service and moved to Interfin. What a great bank. Great service, very accommodating etc..and now Scotia buys them out!

In a recent request I ended up having to call the Presidents office in Toronto to get a special signature guarantee. Whilst I understand this particular request is an unusual procedure here, it was the attitude of the manager for Costa Rica that stunned me the most. After grilling me on why I needed it, he told me he had never heard of the service I needed and doubted it could be done.

His superiors in Canada were not impressed and I had my form in two days thanks to an executive with a little common sense named Greg Moon. I told him in no uncertain terms about the service I had received from their branch since the outset and gave him a detailed reasoning as to why I closed my account. If a few more people did the same I think we could see a change at the top down here which in my opinion is sorely needed.

Clearly the only way this bank will expand here is by acquisition. Anyone tried HSBC?

Since HSBC acquired Banex – It has been completely transformed, they are very much on the ball and I have been very impressed with them since the acquisition

Banking here is going through a bit of a revolution – thank goodness.

In April of 2006, we got a construction mortgage from then-Banex/now HSBC. We have moved all our banking activity to HSBC as a matter of convenience and find them much easier to deal with than Banco Nacional where we dealt before.

I think it depends upon the branch. I began banking with Interfin in Heredia, at the Paseo de Flores mall and had excellent service. When Scotia bought them out, I was concerned, but the service has remained at the same high level.
