I have been asked to send a deposit for a rental via Western Union from Canada to Costa Rica. Is there any danger in that form of money transfer?
Personally, I would hesitate in sending a deposit, especially using this method. It has been known that people post photos of a house that isn’t theirs, the photos are old and not showing as it is ‘now’ or is not the same property.
Suggest you book into a hotel or B&B for a few nights and look round the area that you are interested in staying.[url=http://www.homeaway.com/guarantee/tac.html]Read this info that explains[/url] why you may want to think twice…and I doubt you would get your deposit refunded.

On a positive note for Western Union, I receive a payment from the U.S. each month which I collect in cash at a Western Union affiliated office and have never had a problem.

Places I’ve stayed have either requested a deposit via Paypal or just pay in cash upon arrival. I have never heard that request. Is this house/hotel on VRBO, TripAdvisor or do you know of someone who has stayed there? Trip Advisor is excellent starting point for hotels and VRBO has a large selection of houses from which to choose.
