I’ve been following this story since I was made aware of it on saturday. I thought I would post it in case anyone reading this might have information on missing expats who were selling properties in Costa Rica.

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com – I just received a chilling email. There are apparently dozens of foreigners who are “missing” in Costa Rica. It is now known that William and Jane Cortez were in Costa Rica, at least as early as mid-2005, and maybe before. They came to Panama and murdered the Brown family in approximately mid-November 2007. So – where were they during their first run through Costa Rica? Where did they stay? Where did they live? Their “MO” is to find properties being offered for sale through the Internet, kill the owner, tell everyone they “paid cash” and then later cash out and sell the property to someone else, and then move on. All of you members of the Gringo community up there in Costa Rica – it is now time to put your thinking caps on and track their history up there. Get busy…

They are suspected in seven murders in Panama.

Bloody amazing that nobody has noticed this….
Their real names are: William Dathan Holbert and his girlfriend Laura Michelle Reese
The site says that “Holbert is a white supremacist.” and he even has a swastika tattoo on his upper back and “Aryan Pride” on his left arm
With all this worry about crime, it’s sad that the biggest serial murder story of the decade in Central America is about two American citizens suspected of killing LOTS of people in Panama!

Some of their victims were fugitives from Florida that had been on the run with alias names for twenty years. This explains why the families of those particular victims did not step up to authorities to claim them as missing.
I hope they are able to retrace where the murderers have been over the years to close some missing persons files.July 28, 2010 at 11:08 pm #159480AndrewKeymasterCertainly snappy dressers eh?
Let’s hope they’re sent back to Panama where they will hopefully rot in some hell-hole until someone whacks them rather than get extradited to the USA where the taxpayer will pay for them to watch TV for the next 50 years.

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com – I just got through clearing out a whole bunch of comments that had been posted over the past couple of days. Obviously my phone has been ringing off the hook, and I just finally got around to clearing out the backlog. In one of those posts someone said they had heard some “bar talk” from William Dathan Holbert and Laura Michelle Reese saying they had lived for some time in the area of Jaco, Costa Rica. Therefore, any members of the community of English speaking expatriates who live in or near Jaco, Costa Rica should do a head count. Have you seen these people before? Were they in your area before they came to Bocas del Toro? Did they “buy” or sell any property? They apparently had more than a million dollars in cash when they got to Panama, so that money had to come from somewhere. Did it come from Jaco, Costa Rica? Get busy, guys…

August 3, 2010 at 6:14 pm #159483costaricafincaParticipantI have been following up on that website.
I was surprised to read that they lived near the Cariari Golf Course about 2007, selling cars…
Also the article mentions this:
”Moved To Puerto Viejo: In mid-2007 they left the San Jose area and moved to Puerto Viejo, In Puerto Viejo they hooked up with a relatively young couple who owned a bar. Before too long “Big Bill” and Michelle were running the bar that was owned by the other couple. In late 2007 “Big Bill” and Michelle had convinced this couple to sell their bar and supposedly all four of them were going to move to Bocas del Toro in Panama, together. Supposedly the couple sold their bar for $75,000 dollars, and Bill and Michelle had accumulated $60,000 from the used car business. And then – all four of them left the area for good. The bar was located in Punta Cocles, just outside of Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica. The couple who owned the bar, who supposedly sold it for $75,000 dollars and who supposedly moved to Bocas del Toro with “Big Bill” and “Michelle” were in their mid to late 30’s. The bar was supposedly located “at the end of Punta Cocles.”
Scary….We had looked to moving to Bocas del Toro years ago, but felt it, definitely, ‘wasn’t for us’.

Authorities said they recovered three more bodies Tuesday on property owned by a jailed U.S. man who prosecutors say has confessed to killing five fellow Americans to get their money and property in a Panamanian resort area.
Jose Pachard, deputy director of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, said the remains were found with the help of information provided by the suspect, William Dathan Holbert.
He said searchers found the bodies of an adult man, adult woman and child on the grounds of a hostel operated by Holbert. Two other bodies were found earlier, touching off a search for Holbert and his wife.
Tests were planned to identify the latest remains. On Sunday, prosecutors quoted Holbert as admitting he killed a U.S. man named Mike Brown, his wife and small son about three years ago and buried them on his property.
The two other bodies were identified previously as Cheryl Lynn Hughes, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, who had lived in Panama 10 years and was reported missing in late March, and Bo Icelar, who disappeared in late November and was described by a friend as being from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Panamanian authorities said Holbert and his wife, Laura Michelle Reese, had been charged with murder in the deaths of Hughes and Icelar.
Humberto Mas, director of the forensics institute, said Holbert refused on Tuesday to undergo a psychological analysis and asked for legal assistance.

If you recall seeing these two in the vicinity of a property where the owners just disappeared without so much as a goodbye it is possible that they were victims.

Excuse me scott but u.s. has death penalty. so they kill in costa rica …the u.s extradites them …kills them….slowly and painfully by injection (with an audience no less) of some sort of stuff that they haven’t worked out yet…that should work?
These people are mentally ill and need to be analyzed. He’s too young to be a viet vet, has he been on ritilin for 20yrs or more? what about her? where in the world are they coming from? executing them as you suttley suggest is not going to help society one bit. As Rodney King said: ‘Can’t we all just get along?”August 8, 2010 at 1:10 pm #159488DavidCMurrayParticipantYes, yvette, the only problem is that the murders were not committed in the United States, so the U.S. has no standing to extradite or adjudicate this pair. The crimes were committed on Panamanian or Costa Rican soil. Those are the countries with jurisdiction and Costa Rica, at least, has no death penalty.
And, while we’re at it, can you point us to some credible evidence that these people are clinically mentally ill or that either of them has been on Ritalin or anything else? Or is this something you pulled out of . . wherever?
August 8, 2010 at 4:31 pm #159489mollyjimMember
…evidence that these people are clinically mentally ill or that either of them has been on Ritalin or anything else? …
David, I am not going to go back through all the Panama Guide posts on these two, but I recall allegations that when Wild Bill was running the fitness center in North Carolina that he was using steroids…
And if that is so and he was still using…, then we have all heard of ” ‘roid rage”. Which in my opinion does not make for a valid defense. And because of his “cooperation” with the Panama authorities, Panama Guide reported that he may be entitled to a reduction in his sentence. That would certainly be unfortunate.Jim
Living life slowly in Santa Rosa de PoásAugust 8, 2010 at 5:29 pm #159490DavidCMurrayParticipantOkay, Jim, but first, steriods are an entirely different class of drug from Ritalin. If someone has actual information to substantiate a claim that this guy was using either one, fine. Let’s hear it. Absent that, one does not stand in for the other. Mere conjecture doesn’t count.
Second, since he’s been in Central America for a while, just how long do we know that the “‘roid rage” effect lasts? Months? Years? Is it really material today? Or is the assertion now that he’s been on steroids (but not Ritalin) all along? If yes, where’s the evidence?
Back in my college days, before amphetamines were dangerous, a lot of my classmates and I used ’em to help us stay up and study. That was the early 1960s. What does it tell you about my behavior today?
