I would suggest that you use something else rather than a small safe. Theives will pick it up and steal it as fast as the laptop.

Get a piece of furniture built with a hidden drawer. I am building a couple myself….one is a book shelf with the toe kick being a hidden cavity for storage. Second is a sofa table where just below the top is a hidden cavity.

I would also suggest not getting it built locally.

    Just a suggestion.

false bottom drawers are great. when my house got burglarized, they didn’t find all the money and credit cards my tenant had stashed there. and it’s best not to have all the valuables in one place.

Very good suggestions. I had planned on bolting it to a concrete wall in a fairly inaccesabile place but your points are well taken. thanks

I know PriceSmart was mentioned, but online they have 21 safes listed versus the normal 1 or 2 they have in store.

    Go to
http://www.pricesmart.com/ and select Costa Rica as your country and look under Office > Safes.

I’ve used their online site a number of times and its very easy and safe. (no pun intended)

Use a router etc to make a deep pocket in the top of a solid wooden door. You have the door open and then reach over the top and down into the door. Keeps small items such as jewelery in it.

I have my most valuable things like jewels/gold/documents (other than passport) in a Safety Deposit box at the bank as I’ve known tooo many people that were home invasioned & basically I wouldn’t keep much in the house I wasn’t willing to loose. Just another potential option/way of looking at the situation.

I’ve seen safes at elMar (though in Escazu) for wayyy better prices than EPA though EPA had the largest selection.
