Can anyone tell me if Costa Rica utilities allows net metering? …or if there are any incentives to move to total or supplimental solar? …or anyone involved with existing individuals or companies that offer solar?
I have no reason to believe that Costa Rica’s electricity utility, ICE, permits net metering. I have recently looked into a photovoltaic system, however, and found it ungodly expensive — not at all practical for my application. So the net metering isn’t an issue for me.
There are at least two companies around San Jose which offer solar water heating systems. I have a friend who has installed one and we’re going to put one in the house we have under construction. With all Costa Rica’s sunshine, heating water with solar energy is a total no-brainer. Everybody should be doing it.
George Lundquist has installed one on his house in Barbacoas (near Puriscal); I don’t recall the manufacturer or the exact cost, but it was about $1000, and had a 50+ gallon tank. If interested, you might visit George’s site (http://www.costaricaretireonss.com/) and drop him an email requesting info. I agree with David; solar hot water seems a no brainer to me.

George used a company in Belen called Swissol. We’re using them, too, although we’ll use a system with a different configuration. Their website is http://www.swissol.net. Stephan Frey’s e-mail address is swissol@racsa.co.cr. He speaks very good English.
Tell him Dave Murray sent you.
