We are sick with…..something. Hubby has had it (whatever “it” is) for 20 days and I have had “it” for a week now. (we live near Lake Arenal)

Symptoms are: flu-like aches, mild to moderate headache, fever of up to 3 degrees F (so 101+), then chills and sweats, mild infrequent cough, occasional slight runny nose, and that general run down feeling. No sore throat, which we think is odd.

Snail and mosquito-borne diseases seem to be out. I took an antibiotic (yes, properly) without any effect.
We do hear that others are suffering from the same kind of thing. If anyone knows anything about this, especially how to get rid of the dang thing, please let me know.

If I were you, I would definately be seen by a doctor. Your husband should have gotten over a virus in 3 weeks. Chances are it is something going around and the doctor has seen enough cases of it to know what it is. He is likely to have a cure or at least something to help relieve the symptoms until you both recover. No sense in suffering in silence when a doctor visit doesn’t cost that much. It doesn’t sound like anything real serious but then you never know unless you have it checked out.

Dengue, would be my ‘diagnosis’ too. But since we are not doctors, please go to a clinic or doctors office ASAP.

I think we would all be interested in knowing what this turned out to be when you find out what it is. You said before that mosquito born diseases were somehow ruled out – or did I read that wrong.

I was going to chime in with Dengue too.
Not a lot you can do about it, they say, but here is what we did last year, and it may have really helped.
Papaya Leaf juice. Yup. If you want to know what green tastes like, this is the stuff. You have to make it yourself, can’t buy it, but down here it is very easy to do if you have a vegetable juicer.
My partner Jon had it last year, and his platelet numbers kept falling and falling. I don’t remember the threshold numbers right now, but he was right on it, and was just about to be hospitalized so that they could observe him.
In any case, I did find some info on using Papaya Leaf Juice, and made him drink the prescribed amount for a couple of days, and he went from wanting to die to healthy pretty darn quick.
    Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.
Honestly, I don’t remember where exactly I sourced the information, but here is a link I found after a very quick search.

I am definitely NOT the person who goes online and believes what I want to for the sake of it, just the opposite. But, we really needed to fix this, dengue can be miserable.
They say the cure for most things grows right next to the thing that causes the problem.
BTW, I found that I used the newest freshest leaves, and not the older ones. Again, tastes REALLY GREEN, puts a shot of wheatgrass to shame.
    Good luck.

Wow – I may have to drag hubby to the doc. But I thought that dengue had a high fever? I just can’t find anything that fits where the fever comes and goes like this (except malaria – now there’s a sad thought).

    Thanks guys.

At least it isn’t staph infection! If you are visiting CR just be careful, don’t scratch bug bites and keep small wounds very clean! You can get infected very quickly! It is caused by bacteria and high humidity. If it begins to look like a small boil don’t go into the ocean or lake or pool and go see a doctor right away. Our two sons are just getting over it. It has ruined their 2 week Summer break! No futbol and surfing until it heals up and the meds and shots are done! Stay clean ! D Thomas

Nice doctor. The answer? A different antibiotic, plus a second pill. Also that phrase we so “love” to hear: This time of year, there’s a lot of that going around. Made me feel right at home. LOL

Doc gave me Augmentin (antibiotic) and something called Arcoxia and I feel human for the first time in 2 weeks.

Arcoxia is for arthritis and lower back pain (I was having pain in my lower back and legs and I do have arthritis). This morning I am pain-free for the first time in…well a long time. Arcoxia is not approved by the FDA for use in the States, but my husband, a PhD who was in medical research for 27 years, reviewed the information on it and said I should continue to take it for the week of the prescription. The FDA just rejected Merck Pharmaceuticals’ request for approval but the medication is sold in 63 countries. Nothing I have ever tried has worked this well or this fast. Look it up, check it our, ask your doctor.
