February was a wonderful month to spend in Costa Rica. We left Maryland on February 2nd the snow hit on February 4th. The snow amounted to over 80 inches by the time it was done. This, we enjoyed while sitting on the patio overlooking a beautiful valley outside Grecia with temperatures ranging from the mid-sixties to low eighties. Had more drizzle than usual but the weather was wonderful. Had a chance to see a little of San Ramon. The views around San Ramon were outstanding but the wind was incredible, as was the amount of firewood piled by the house for those cooler evenings. Love the Grecia area for temperature…up the hill for cool evenings and great sleeping( no fireplace needed)…down the hill for warmth and sunshine…a lot depends on which slope one is on…Grecia is a beautiful town – well kept with basically everything you need for day to day living and close enough to San Jose for those items not found locally. The farmer’s market on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning were outstanding for the week’s supply of fresh vegetables and fruit…let alone the garden right outside our door that provided fresh cilantro, onions, peppers, snow peas, and tomatoes. The improved roads around Grecia and in other parts of Costa Rica were greatly appreciated by us as we had rented a car again. Hard to believe what a little blacktop can do for travel time.
We finished our trip up with a bus tour by Caravan. This was my third time with them and my husband’s second. They had changed the tour enough that we thought it would be fun to do again and it was. This time we did see rain in the rain forest…at Tortuguero, the monkeys had more sense than the people and stayed under cover for the most part. Saw many varieties of birds, lizards, and frogs. The guide was excellent as usual. The pineapple plantation was interesting, the fruit was delicious. Rain followed us to la Fortune but cleared long enough to enjoy a burp of the volcano, which I happen to capture with my camera, and a soak at Baldi’s hot springs, compliments of Caravan. The biggest surprise came from going to Guancaste which is a province that we had not been to during the five years that we have been coming to Costa Rica. What a change a few miles can make. The weather turned dry and when we got out of the bus in Liberia it was truly a desert hot. Our accommodations in Guancaste was the new J.W. Marriot resort right on the Pacific… it is a 5-star accommodation with awesome chefs and a staff that can not do enough for the customer. The weather was hot beach weather and we got more sunburn in two days at the Marriot than we had the previous three weeks in Grecia.
For those of you who live in Costa Rica, I would recommend the Caravan tour to see other parts of the beautiful country at a very affordable price. For those of you who are thinking about making a move to Costa Rica, the tour offers a wonderful assortment of locations, history, and information that may help you decide.
We love being tourists in Costa Rica. It is also fun to pretend to be an expatin Costa Rica. Maybe one day we will make the jump, but for now the tourist life is for us. -
