Hi everyone! I’ll be coming to Costa Rica next week, and will be spending the winter – and really looking forward to a new adventure! I have two questions, the first is about swimming.
I’d love to live in a place where I can walk to the nearest swimming hole/river/lake for my daily swim, and would also like to live in town, whichever town that may be. There must be dozens of places in CR (or at least several) where this is possible, but nobody talks about them. Can anyone offer suggestions? Lake Arenal seems the obvious choice. Are there others?
My second question is about dental work. Many people say it’s so much cheaper than in the US but, not being American, this tells me nothing. There is an article and a video on this site called The REAL Cost of Dentistry in Costa Rica which I assumed (incorrectly) would give me at least a clue, but no… I realize that prices vary by dentist and area, but can you give me a sort of general idea about what dental work costs, say a root canal, a filling, veneers, or a single-tooth implant?

Dental..I have a wonderful dentist in Jaco on the pacific coast. I had a crown done for 250 not including a root canal, it was a replacement, I also had a bridge done for 750. the dentist is so gentle you dont even know he is working and he speaks english.
swimming. the higher up you go in altitude the cooler the temp. Jaco is humid but you have a beach that runs all the way down and up the coast but it gets hotter than San Jose. This is where we live so we know this area..Oh and there are salt water crocs….
Hi Barbara Ann. I normally live in Spain, and 250 is about what I’d pay there – much cheaper than Canada.
The coast, however, doesn’t interest me. I love the ocean, but the coasts are too hot and humid for me! And salt water crocs? This is meant as encouragement to go to Jaco?:wink:
personally, i wouldn’t swim in any body of water here. maybe if you were way way way way way from civilization it would be okay. the oceans are really warm and lovely, some larger towns have big swimming pools, but i would avoid all rivers anywhere near a city.
What’s your reasoning, Maravilla? One of the things CR is noted for is water activities (white water rafting, Lake Arenal, etc.). Is it an issue with raw sewage going directly into the waterways?
Swimming in Lake Arenal is lovely and we also enjoy our ‘dipping area’ in the Rio Aguacate (a bit chilly though). In general, the Arenal area is delightful, but rainy atm. As to dental work, there is an excellent recommendation on this website.

I saw the recommendation on this site, and have seen several other sites as well; they’re all pretty vague about actual costs, however, which is my burning question… :?::?:
Try contacting the dentist/dental clinic directly. Many of them publish their rates there or will email the rate list.

I particularly likes the beaches near Cahuita and Puerto Viejo, (Punta Uma?) on the Caribbean side… but for dental..my guy is Dr. Mario Garitas and an implant molar runs about $1300.00 , $850 for the implant the remainder for the crown or whatever. I have had root canals for 200.00 He had a practice in Miami, speaks perfect ENglish and is very concerned about being gentle.
He was across from the Courtyard Marriot in San Jose and may still be there “Adult Dentistry of Costa Rica” also on facebook and you can Google Dr. Mario Garita..
Scott Oliver (webmaster) also knows him.

Thanks Deke272. Dr. Mario is quite heavily promoted on this site, and I’ve heard of him. No prices are listed though, so I was glad for that information. (I did request a quote, and got no response). Costs are almost one third of what I’d pay here – excellent! I do wonder why nobody ever seems to mention other dentists, however….
As for beaches, what was in my head in my original post did not transfer itself to the post: I find the coasts too warm and humid, so am looking for places to live and swim at higher elevations – i.e. the cooler climate of the central valley.
