We plan on retiring in the Tamarindo area, anyone have any advice or insight to the positives or negatives? The last time we were in the area was about two years ago.
It has significantly changed in two years and is becoming more like Jaco – overdeveloped and all of the problems Jaco has with crime and drugs. The roads are all paved and it has turned from a surf town into a purely tourist driven town with plastic stores and plastic surgeons. We were there in 2005 and again in 2007; the change was dramatic and disappointing, but endemic in Guanacaste. It has only gotten worse. Playa Grande/Huacas is much more peaceful.

I say travel further north (up the coast) to coco, ocotal, hermosa, or panama. we bought in coco and love the quietness, friendliness, safe and most of all the convinience – 25 min form Liberia airport, three new supermarkets, development is there, all around, but it still has the small town appeal. I hope it does stay this way for as long as possible. each year i hear new deveopments going up. again, you do need to see for yourself. it doesn’t have the white sand beach that “north americans” search for. its golden brown sand may be a blessing in desquise and keep most away.

Thank you very much for the information.
I’d say to visit both areas for yourself and decide. It’s nothing like Jaco and they have recently halted all construction. The Coco/Hermosa area is know as “the land of the newly wed and nearly dead”. The beaches are nothing like the ones further south from Playa Danta all the way to Playa Junquial. Having said that, everyone has their own likes and dislikes, so check out both areas and decide for yourself.
Hi Soldier: If you want some information on the different beach areas from Tamarindo north, feel free to contact me privately. My name is Becky and I am Scott’s preferred Realtor in the Tamarindo area north to Hermosa, rebecca@welovecostarica.com
Soldier, Becky “mediatica” is a great source of information and great to deal with. On the topic of location, I prefer the Flamingo or Cochal areas. Becky knows those areas very well. The beaches are very nice and the setting is a little more relaxed than either Coco or Tamarindo.
