Hi All,

Thanks so much to everyone who shares their knowledge and experiences in this forum! I especially enjoy the videos of members’ experiences living in CR, like Les Waggoner and his family’s. (Thanks Les and Scott!!)

My partner and I found this site a couple of weeks ago, and really appreciate it. We are hoping to relocate to CR within 5-7 years, would like to come sooner, but probably will need to wait for social security (assuming the program is still intact) 😕

I also found the Lighthouse Animal Rescue website recently, located in Atenas, and am really enjoying the heart-warming stories, photos and videos about the dogs and other animals they rescue.

They have entered the Petfinder Shelter Challenge to try to win prize money to help cover the costs of rescuing & rehabilitating the abandoned and abused animals. People vote for their favorite shelter, and the groups that get the most votes win. Right now they are in 2nd place in the International division, but are in danger of losing out to another group that is gaining on them.

Please consider joining me to vote for them, either one time or on a daily basis, until Dec. 19. Instructions can be found at http://www.mrbudbud.blogspot.com.

Thanks again, everyone, for making this such a great forum!

There are so many animals (mostly dogs) running the streets in Costa Rica. I am so happy to see that there is at least one animal shelter taking them in and finding them great forever homes. I hope they win the contest. Rosie

Thanks for your reply, Rosie, and for voting for Lighthouse.
I believe their greatest need (besides being a winner in the contest) is for loving foster homes, so they can save more animals. I hope one day to be able to help them out in person in this or other ways. 😀

there is a woman named Helene Wirt who has a shelter in Pieddes Sur and she, too, does wonderful things for the stray dogs that find their way to her. right now she has 140 dogs, and all of them are well fed, and loved. she has a sponsorship program where you can adopt a dog for x amount of money a month. i’ve been to her facility and it is truly impressive. she has names for every one of the dogs and when she shows up at the pens they go absolutely crazy for her. this is her facebook page.

Maravilla, Thanks for sharing this information – it’s incredible the difference that one person can make in this world. Does Helen have staff or volunteers to help her? Is she able to adopt many dogs out?

yes, she has volunteers to help with the animals and two fulltime people who care for them and clean up after them. she tries her best to find them homes, and if not that, then she tries to get each dog a sponsor to defray the astronomical costs of caring for 140 animals. i and a patrocinadora to a dog named Bully. i’d adopt him but i just can’t deal with one more dog, so i do the next best thing. if she were closer to me, i would volunteer because it really is an impressive operation. and like kitten jones, who runs lighthouse, helene really loves those animals. i have such admiration for kitten and helene — i could not do what they do so tirelesslesly and ceaselesssly. god love them!

Maravilla, thanks for the additional information. You’re a hero, too – Helene and Frances/Kitten couldn’t do what they do without supporters like you!

nah, i’m not a hero. it’s easy to give money; what’s hard is actually doing the job, and both these women do that better than anyone i know.

UPDATE: They had fallen to third, but after this appeal and others, they have moved back into second. Those “one clicks” are a powerful force. Please keep it up – just a few more days!

I just voted for Atenas, Mexico is in 1’st place, for now.

have rescued and adopted 5 dogs in my life, all abandoned or strays and note one of them gave me any trouble, some lasted 5 years and others 12.

my latest addition is a 12 pound Dachshund, unknowned age and after $500.00 in bills from the VET and 2 years with me I would not trade him for Lassie.

Christmas is coming and I beg you to not do an impulse buy on a puppy for the holidays, a dog is a commitment and is a 24/7 responsibility.

that puppy might look CUTE but they grow and have to be trained and that takes time, energy and money.

I still remember the DEBACLE that happened when the movie the 101 Dalmations come from Disney, everyone wanted one and the puppy mills’ where churning them at an alarming rate.

GUESS what happened 6 to 12 months later?? when the FAD went away, the shelters had thousands of dalmations because the owners could not handle them.

the Dalmations are not the most intelligent dog species and very hard to train compared to the Poodle

same sad story with the Pit Bull

but the HORROR story of all of them is the Greyhound, breed to run and run they do but if they have any TYPE of accident then they are discarded in a SECOND

you will not find a better companion than a Greyhound, they are loyal, affectionate, submissive, calm, intelligent and they get along with any other animal

you can walk them and they will not pull you but on a open field with you trowing a toy they are like “FLASH GORDON”

I hope lighthouse wins

4 million dogs are killed every year!
Breeders = puppy mills.
Remember all the Shina Ibu hubub when their webcam was live? Wonder how many of those dogs are dead now because they grew up and were abandoned.
Rescue dogs are best.

Thanks, Maravilla, GoingLike60 and Warren, for supporting Lighthouse Animal Rescue. They are still in 2nd place, with 9 days to go, but need every vote possible to keep their position. 2nd place gets $1,000, prize money, while I believe 3rd place gets zero $.

Folks can go to http://www.mrbudbud.blogspot.com to sign up for their daily reminder & update on their daily good news & photo.

http://dogsindanger.com is a wonderful website that has publicized and therefore saved via adoption, many U.S. dogs over the past few years.

I’m so glad CR has at least one animal rescue operation. Go, Lighthouse!

Voting to help them win a grant is easy. Just:

1. Go to The Animal Rescue Site at http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/.
2. Click the link to donate free food to abandoned animals. The system will display a page that has a Vote Now message at the top next to a red heart.
3. Click on the Vote Now link.
4. Type in Lighthouse and select Costa Rica. Then click Search.
5. Click the VOTE button on the line for Lighthouse Animal Rescue.

Let’s all help Lighthouse continue to help homeless animals by voting every day between now and Dec. 19.
