February 17, 2012 at 8:52 pm #170358sstarkeyMemberI use ADVANTIX on my dog. It’s a once per month flea/tick treatment – it’s drops that you put onto the dog’s back. In 8 months in CR, I have only found about 5 ticks on my dog and she loves to run in the woods. She has short hair so it’s easy to see the ticks and I check her closely every day. Long-haired dogs should probably be brushed daily.
I also supplement her dry food with a cooked chicken liver/rice mixture with a little bit of garlic added in – the garlic is supposed to help repel ticks but I think you shouldn’t go overboard with it.
No idea how to get ticks out of the house though, other than normal pest control and thorough cleaning.
Good luck!
February 17, 2012 at 9:39 pm #170359juliabMemberIt will greatly depend on where you live. When we lived in the Central Valley, we never had a problem (I guess when pesticiding coffee, ticks get killed as well as do the termites). We also aplied flea/tick drops every month (and still do that).
When we moved to the Caribbean side, we started to have tick problem right away. They are everywhere and they are huge! We’re still looking for a remedy…
Our meanwhile solution is not let our dogs in the house anymore. May be that’s a solution for you, too? It’s warm outside and there are no real predators (depends on where you are and the dog’s size, of course). We also do a pat-check every day to look for new ticks.

Revolution is a little more expensive but it also prevents heartworms. The problem is that the ticks have to bite the dog before they get poisoned. This is the time of year (the dry season) when newly hatched ticks start appearing. They come in huge groups and so if your dog gets into a group of them they will be inundated with tiny, itchy ticks until the medicine kills them. Controling ticks on all fronts (cows, horses, dogs) seems to help reduce their numbers. Now I just need to find out how to keep the ticks off of me!

Luckily, we have just had the ticks!:roll:February 18, 2012 at 7:17 pm #170362waggoner41Member
Please help us to get rid of ticks on our dog and in the house? we already seen vet and bought color and special repellent, we use pest control from the vet every 3 days, we washibng dog with special soup every 3 days nothing really works. We have a similar problem west of Colon. We have an acre of land and the entire place should be treated to prevent ticks. If you have a small yard it shouldn’t amount to very much but the process of extracting the essential oils from the crushed original product will amount to some work.
I’m looking at the necessity of applying this spray every month but it remains to be seen how long it will be effective. We live in a particularly vulnerable area.A study was done to determine what might be effective in tick control. This is a down-loadable .pdf file from which I extracted only the pertinent information.
A biological evaluation was made with raw hydro alcoholic extracts (R-OH) to determine the most promissory compounds… The species that produced the highest mortality were Zizigium aromaticum (cloves), Morus alba (mulberry), Piper nigrum(black pepper) and the mixture of Allium sativu m (garlic) – Z. aromaticum (cloves). One of our dogs became anemic but we caught it early. The vet prescribed antibiotics Doxiciclin 100mg for 5 days and Prednisol 20mg for 3 weeks of antibiotic treatment.

Luckily, we have just had the ticks!
One of our dogs was susceptible to bot flies and we began spraying him daily with OFF for three weeks. He hasn’t been bothered by the flies in several months but I am reserving judgement as to whether the treatment, for reasons I don’t know, may be permanent until a year has passed.
February 18, 2012 at 9:03 pm #170364maravillaMemberi use a combo of essential oils — cedar, lemongrass, rosemary, cinnamon, and lavender in a solution of water, and a tablespoon of castor oil — shake well, and spray on dogs. i have had no problems with fleas or ticks since i’ve been using this. i occasionally find just ONE flea on my cow dog after he’s rolled in the grass so then he gets a bath with a goat’s milk soap that has cedar oil in it, and then a good spritz with my homemade mixture. i don’t use any chemicals on my dogs at all.

Animals get bot flies from mosquitoes – the fly catches the mosquito in the air and attaches an egg. When the mosquito bites an animal, the bot egg falls off, hatches and bores into the animal. So mosquito control is the key to preventing bot flies. Many aromatic compounds, including OFF, will discourage mosquitoes from biting. Ticks are not so easily detoured.February 20, 2012 at 1:56 pm #170366johnrMember
i use a combo of essential oils — cedar, lemongrass, rosemary, cinnamon, and lavender in a solution of water, and a tablespoon of castor oil — shake well, and spray on dogs. i have had no problems with fleas or ticks since i’ve been using this. i occasionally find just ONE flea on my cow dog after he’s rolled in the grass so then he gets a bath with a goat’s milk soap that has cedar oil in it, and then a good spritz with my homemade mixture. i don’t use any chemicals on my dogs at all.
You must have the best smelling animals not only in Costa Rica but the WORLD! 😀
February 20, 2012 at 2:19 pm #170367maravillaMemberyes, they smell divine — but those are scents that repel fleas and ticks, and it seems to be working. all the organic/natural pest repellants have those oils as a base.
February 20, 2012 at 8:20 pm #170368VersatileMemberBefore all the new stuff and back in the late 70’s and 80’s i use 5% Sevin dust for tomato’s etc. Works great when they have a bunch of ticks in the ears.
February 21, 2012 at 6:25 pm #170369elindermullerMemberThe best result I get is injecting the dogs with Dectomax, but it is not recommended on all dogs, specially pure bred dogs. All the other stuff is temporary or partial, never eliminates all the ticks, specially those out in the yard. The dog may be clean today, but tomorrow they are out again, picking up new bugs. I spend time each day, picking ticks off the dogs. I think, living in the Tropics means living with bugs, just get used to it.
February 23, 2012 at 2:42 pm #170370AndrewKeymasterAbout five years ago, I rescued a very sick female dog which had obviously only recently had it’s puppies …
I’m guessing she had been dumped by the side of the road because I had not seen her in my area beforehand.
Rushing outside my casita to an appointment – one of the few I attend with a shirt and tie – I found her lying outside my garage…
Somehow she knew I would help…
I carried her into my garage and laid her down on an old towel.
I removed over 100 ticks from her including from inside her nostrils… She was very, very weak but, I am delighted to say that she did eventually recover (with the help of a lady veterinarian friend of mine) and I did find a good home for her…
I love Mother Nature and all animals but must confess that fleas and ticks are NOT on the top of my list …
Scott
PS. I had to throw my trousers, shirt and tie out after that ….
