I am addicted to TIVO or DVR – some way to digitally record tv shows and watch later (fast forwarding commercials, etc.). With three little kids I would never see anything if not for this new feature. Is there any of this type of service in the Escazu/Santa Ana area? How does it work?
Thanks for any advice.

I’m not sure whether the cable company can provide you with a DVR, but I know you can get one if you get satellite, because you can use any equipment the Dish Network supports. These people http://www.sunsattv.com are one of the companies that do sat installs in Costa Rica, among others. You could purchase a Dish Net DVR box in the states and it can be connected down in C.R. Not only that, but you can probably receive much of the same programming Dish Net subscribers in the US get because one of the main satellites they use is visible from most of C.R.
Another option (if you’re really desperate and don’t want to deal with satellite) is to buy a cheap Windows PC with Media Center on it. It can take the feed out of a cable box and record it on the PCs hard drive. You can watch it back on the PC, or on any TV or monitor that has a PC or VGA input…

I didn’t realize how liberating it could be to NOT watch it until I was there for two months and never saw so much as the news. I didn’t miss it at all. Why move to Costa Rica and then stay tied to the boob tube?

They can provide you with a 1.2 or 2.4 meter dish and they can facilitate your enrollment as a Dish Network subscriber. You use their New York City physical address which enables you to purchase the NYC broadcast channels except PBS. As far as I know, SunSat is not providing Dish Network’s DVR tuners, but you can buy them on e-bay and inform Dish Network of what you’re doing. Just don’t telll them you’re in Costa Rica!
From Costa Rica, you can look at Dish Network’s satellites number 61 and 119, but one dish cannot receive signals from both. So if you want all the channels that are broadcast from the two satellites, you’ll need two dishes. Most of the good stuff is on 119. You can look at Dish Network’s website for the details.
There is a point in Costa Rica south of which you cannot receive the Dish Network signal due to the curvature of the earth. You’d have to consult with SunSat.
DirecTv provides service in Costa Rica, but it is DirecTV **Latin America**. Most of the programming is in Spanish and the signal originates from Argentina.
