    Hola,

I am a Torontonian, moved from Montreal in the 70’s, who is becoming a pensionado. Looking for others in Toronto and area – Montreal is close enough, so is Hamilton, St. Catherines, Newfoundland, Victoria BC, NYC, LA, San Francisco, etcetera. By now you are getting the idea I hope!?

There is a Canadian Club/Group located in San Jose. I could not find an American Club/Group. If you know of one, let use know.

I love networking, so let me share a few tips, for Canadians who want to move to Costa Rica. There are subtle differences in obtaining the necessary legal documents, then those required when coming from the USA.

    1) DO NOT VISIT Costa Rica because you will fall in love with the people, the climate, the values (atttudes & $’s) and so much more, that you will never want to come home.

That is what happened to me, so here goes valuable info for the winter weary Canadians…BBBBBrrrr.

(In Costa Rica, I feel with the little bit of clothing required, like a Canadian nudist in clothes. Ah, the pleasure of leaving behind flu season, colds, road rage, winter clothes, and boots, and all that other stuff… AAaaahhh…)

    2) Carmen the Vice-Consul at the Toronto Costa Rican office is a doll. Send here my regards ONLY IF YOU ARE A VERY nice person. So is Lina the Consul General in their Ottawa Embassy. Treat these people nicely, very nicely.

2 eh!) Torontonians or anyone using the Toronto Consulate to move to Costa Rica should do as much homewotk as possible.

Visit their web-site at for Consulate General of Costa Rica — Toronto office. Do your homework. The better prepared you are, the easier the process will be.

    3) Get a GREAT lawyer in San Jose.

3 eh! – Well I am Canadian, and a writer, what do you expect?) Carmen may give you the contact information for Roberto, my lawyer – who is a great guy, reasonable and honest. Ask her nicely. I discovered she like fresh almonds the last time I was there. She’s married and very special person. Are you getting the HINT!?

3 Ah-ha!) No I am not related to Roberto, nor am I on commission, but when you know good people, share them with all of us.

This is important, as the more knowledgeable the lawyer is about the Canadian Costa Rican immigration needs, and the more responsive they are, as well as the more familiar Carmen is with them, the easier everyones job is, and the… well you get the idea by now, I hope!?

    4) To share is to learn. To share without need, to give from the heart, is as close as I can be in such a confined space/posting to lettng you understand the Costa Rican people. Costa Ricans are a treasure, and I am honored, actually surprised to think they would even want my ugly mug down there. Guess there is no accunting for taste.

5 – and why not!?) Yes, I am single, 54, and male, with lots of my own long curly hair. Into natural health and healing, and… ooopppsss this is not the place for posting for singles looking for singles.

Sorry about that. No, not really, just laughing and helping make others laugh.

So couples, singles with good hearted souls, moving to or living in Costa Rica, are welcome to post here and I will get back to you, if you want to connect or just comment about what I posted.

Hope this helps brighten your day.

    Beuno dias! Chao Chao Kenny

We are a late fifty couple getting our residency papers in order. Problem was I am English, my long version birth certificate needs to come from UK. Been 2 months now trying to get it and have now found an excellent agency in UK bmd-certificates.com who can give Express Service for a Birth Certificate Long Version for 60 uk pounds sterling Express dispatch. For anyone who is originally a Brit living in Canada this info could be a time-saver.

Also Jan.06 we joined arcr in CasaCanada San Jose. Jorge there is the head of the New Membership, he put me onto the bmd people in UK and has been very supportive and helpful whilst we are getting our documentation together. Hope any of this helps others.

We bought our land 5 years ago and two winters back built a small 1 bedroom cottage overlooking the mountains south of Jaco Beach around Uvita, not exactly beach living as we are 150 ft. up with wonderful ocean views at the front and mountains behind us. We have managed to escape Canadian winters a little bit Dec. and Jan for past two years staying in our beautiful own piece of paradise. I have to say this is a Dream “come true”. We are now looking forward to retiring Jan 2007. As you said,,, don’t go to visit…. we just never want to come back so this year when we go for a few weeks during the winter it will be Summer before we return.

Good Luck to all those contemplating the wonders of this truly remarkable country and people. Go for it!! You will never look back.

    Hola Scott,

Yes. Roberto Umana and George the gentleman who sent me to him are two very fine folks. The universe is very kind to me. The connection to George and then Roberto was made within 2 days of arriving in Costa Rica.
