“A tourist may apply for a ninety day extension of the visa from the Costa Rica Immigration Department, on the payment of US$100.00. It is unclear as to how many times such an extension would be granted in this manner.”
I do not plan to get permanent residency and I could, since my oldest son and my wife are Tico’s, but do plan to stay in CR between 3-5 months out of the year. Wondering how this will work out??

Firstly, this won’t apply until AFTER March 1 2010 and as to how it will work is anyone’s guess at the moment, because the regulations that dictate HOW a law is governed have not been written and published yet.
MY GUESS, would be that prior to the elapse of the first 90 days, you would go to Migracion and apply for the extension. They will probably want proof that you have sufficient funds to do so and then for a payment of $100 they will stamp your passport accordingly.
Whether they allow further extensions will PROBABLY be at their discretion or it will be a one time only per visit. Only time will tell…
This is becoming known as the “SNOWBIRD” clause, as it appears it was put in for people like yourself that want to stay 4 – 5 months per year.
Like I said though… we will have to wait for the regulations…

In both you can apply for turist extention. Regarding to the new law (2010) you have to pay the 100 $. You have to apply BEFORE the 90 days are over and show the funds to survive the period of extention. In both laws it sounds that you can only get ONE extention and then have to leave. The still existing law says that you can extend another 90 days which is actually not the case. An Information sheet from Migracion says that they grant a max. of 60 days.

As to the new law… it doesn’t go into this much detail yet… but I can see it being similar… with maybe a larger amount needed… Like I said we will have to wait and see on that one…

But there is more to a 90 day visa extension. You need to file the form for the extension and also 3 photos passport size. Certified copy of all the pages of your Passport with every page signed by a notarized agent or Lawyer.
Certified photocopy o f your exit ticket from C.R. (Airplane Ticket) and you must prove that you have $500.00 for every month of the extension (60 day’s Max)
I am pretty sure that some lawyers in C.R. will be able to provide this service.
The extension is for 60 day’s but it does not say if you can do it a 2nd time. I believe you could or leave the country for 72 hours.
I don’t see the $100.00 requirement there is a 175 colones per month in stamps.

September 21, 2009 at 12:01 pm #197676GringoTicoMemberaquirrewar,
The old rule is you can extend your personal stay only one time before you have to leave the country for 72 hours. I don’t think they ever changed that.
My question is, if you have a Tica wife, why not just apply for residency? It is “in force” as soon as you apply, regardless of how long it takes to be processed. It does have to be renewed annually, at a cost, so I’m not sure which is more expensive. It is, however, much more convenient. It may also afford you a tremendous tax break with the IRS.

What’s the tax break a U.S. citizen gets by marrying a Costa Rican?

At my age I have to be close to a Hospital, being retired from the Military I have TRICARE for my health benefit, $12.00 CO-pay if I see a RN, PA, Dr, Specialist or a Rocket Scientist
Not only is my wife %110 tica but my oldest son was born in CR (thank you Uncle Sam) the other one in Germany and the last one in Panama
It’s not worth it for me to stay 12 months in CR, maybe 4?? out of the year

and if the residency is going to cost me 13% for “La Caja” then NO THANK YOU
October 8, 2009 at 5:51 am #197679the kiddMemberI have a 2 1/2 year old son and im in the middle of getting a residency. Im getting a relative residency i guess its different type of residency, look on the costa rican embassy website… my lawyer told me I dont have to leave costa rica because I have a son that is costa rican and that its my constatucional right to be in costa rica for as long as I want and also I can never be deported for any reason(I read the deporting part on one of the embassies web sites). With or without residency. And im court ordered to pay child support and the babies mother blocked my passport so theres only 2 ways I can leave the country: One:is she gives me written permission verified through the child support office. Two:I have to put 13 months of child support in our court appointed account at BCR.I have a friend who has a daughter there hes been there for 9 yrs and doesnt have his residency and hes only left the country a few times and they have never said anything to him, no fines or nothing…If you have any doubts ask a lawyer or look it up in the costa rica embassy website.. Good luck
October 8, 2009 at 10:35 pm #197680aguirrewarMemberTrue statement Kidd:
:Two: I have to put 13 months of child support in our court appointed account at BCR to leave CR.”
Now think about this for a moment; if you do not come back and have any property after 13 months it will be garnished by the State towards your child support payments and you loose your residency in CR.
You do NOT have permanent residency with this arrangement you my friend are a prisoner of the SYSTEM because the “STATE” has NO children and the state will not pay when the father is alive and you are the one to pay the Child support for your son/daughter and if you do not pay your father and mother are liable if living in CR.
I would not like that kind of residency
