Returning to Flamingo Beach area again this year at the end of June. Bringing 2 friends who have never been to CR. Anyone got any suggestions as to sights to visit from Liberia down to Tamarindo area? I found a National Park not too far away. Located a Coffee Tour outside of Liberia. Will have a rental car. I drove from SJO to Playa Flamingo and to Samara last year, so I know about the roads/traffic. Arenal seems too far away. One friend insists we MUST visit a rainforest…or else ! Plan on driving to Tamarindo one day. Maybe return to Samara. Pls share your suggetions.
Two years until retirement..have been planning the move to CR for about 10 years. Gracias, Amigos!May 1, 2010 at 8:00 pm #165015costaricafincaParticipantThings ot do around Guayabo de Bagaces in the interior, and is about 40 mins from Liberia.
First tow are inexpensive hot springs, with Termamania being the best dealhttp://www.termomania.net

While you are in the area, you might consider taking guests to the Geo-thermal electric plant on Miravalles Volcano – Planta Miravalles. Also there is a new wind farm that you will pass.
The is a lovely waterfall is called “Llanos del Cortes” and is just north of Bagaces. As you are going north from Bagaces, it will be a left turn and there is a sign, ‘Cataratas’. Travel down a gravel road for a short while and at the end is the waterfall and a parking area. It is a great place with a little calm “bay” for swimming and howler monkeys, often overhead.
For the Rio Celeste, from the PanAm Highway, head north to Upala on Route 6. Go through Bijagua (or stop and have lunch) and drive to the road that is the entrance to the Tenorio National Park. Turn right here and follow the road to the Park entrance. It’s about a 3 km hike through the rainforest to the river and the gorgeous, huge waterfall. It’s not a simple walk in the park – there is some up and down – but it’s not all that difficult.
Part of this post has been copied & pasted from elsewhere…May 2, 2010 at 5:23 am #165016mediaticaMemberI would suggest taking the ‘monkey trail’ from Potrero and taking part in the Congo Trail canopy tour. Very fun (must have a 4×4). You can also check Rincon de la Vieja volcano. The hacienda guachipelin adventure tour is awesome! My favorite part is the white water tubing. Seeing a rain forest is such a great experience, but you will have to travel at least 3 hours to get over to see one (with Arenal or Monteverde being about the same distance from Tamarindo). The Seabird sailing catamaran out of Flamingo is fun. Avellanas beach is beautiful (just south of Tamarindo)and worth visiting. A tour down the estuary in Las Baulas national park is a great experience too. Have fun! Becky

To each his own..huh? That’s why they make vanilla and chocolate… Coke and Pepsi…paper or plastic ! Right?
Hey..if you enjoy it..that’s all that matters !
Thanks for the tips. I am still taking all of these great suggestions and sorting thru them. I appreciate your ideas!May 4, 2010 at 1:33 pm #165020F.A SkippyMemberIf you don’t see Lake Arenal and the volcano you’re really missing out.
Flaming was nice 20 years ago but nowadays I shoot right on by and go up to San Juan del Sur.May 11, 2010 at 2:23 pm #165021ocotalitoMemberMore details about “Cataratas de Cortes”:
Coming south from Liberia make a right turn at 2.7 km after the bridge over the river Potrero. Make another right turn at the sign. Park the car and make a donation for the local school. Descend by foot to the base of the waterfall.
The waterfall is the background of this funny short movie:

On an important note: if you have concerns or any problem negotiating large rocks and wobbly stones, do not attempt to go down to the pool. -
