I have a 2006, Toyota Hilux Double Cab truck. I’m looking to add running boards, a tool box and perhaps some other upgrades. Where would the be the best place to find that kinda stuff in the San Jose area for a reasonable price? Im in Guanacaste and have no clue where to go. I figure Toyota would be the most expensive. Any good part stores that may have that kind of stuff? Also, Im bringing a CD/DVD player for my truck with me, anywhere you think could install it?
November 19, 2009 at 1:23 pm #158469perrolocoMemberThere is an accessory store next to the gas station in Santa Cruz. They do tint, radios, etc…. I’ve never used them, but have seen the store there. Also, I’ve seen a few car accessory stores in Liberia as well. Just outside of Belen on the right hand side (on the way to Liberia) there is a place that sells the nerf bars and “mataburros”. It’s just before the place that sells “superbloque”.

Can you provide any pros or cons regarding the Toyota Hilux. I currently have a 2007 Toyota 4Runner here in the U.S., which I will sell prior to our relocation to CR. I am considering purchasing the Toyota Hilux or the Toyota Fortuner(my understanding is that this vehicle is the CR version of the 4Runner.) Any information you could provide, would be greatly appreciated.

Even the older ones (94′ and up) are reliable, strong and will get around well. Of course the newer ones look better, get better milage and are more comfortable. Not to mention it gets more ladies looking too. I bought mine from http://www.crautos.com , after looking at some car lots and the Toyota dealer in SJ, I found buying it direct from the owner was the best choice. Of course, doing that means your putting more of the “inspection and due diligence” on yourself. There is an article on this website about buying used cars, read it and follow it. I took mine to the Toyota dealer for a full checkup and inspection before purchase which was $200 well spent. They found no problems.
I paid $24k for a 2006 Hilux in great condition with lots of upgrades, a clean title and no accidents. A new one will run over/around $40K. I have had no problems so far, just regular maintenance, and it goes everywhere I need to go, smooth and in style. I also have a 94′ Hilux which is my work truck, and runs great as well and has had minimal problems given its age. Both are dependable, and will handle the CR better then most, with few mechanical problems.
Here are my two Hilux’s. You can see what you should get for the money. Big Red is a 94′ and Pimpy Silver is a 2006′:

Thanks. I’m aware of both of those places. I was thinking I could get a better deal in San Jose though, since I will be there anyways. I thought the place next to the Gas station in Santa Cruz was the new Toyota Dealer?
November 19, 2009 at 10:32 pm #158473perrolocoMemberIt is, but there is an accessory place directly (I think connected) to the gas station and yes, you’d be much better off doing it all in San Jose, I just thought you were asking for someplace in GTE.
November 20, 2009 at 8:02 am #158474caliskatariParticipantAnyone?? So to be more specific..I’m looking for a Diamond Plate toolbox, running boards, and a place to install a DVD/CD player I already have. Anyone know of a place in the SJ area with good prices and reliable service? Any help or ideas are appreciated, Im going to San Jose next week. Thanks
November 20, 2009 at 4:30 pm #158475ticopazMemberHi Soldier, the only difference is the Forerunner is the station wagon and the Hilux the Pick up. Same vehicle.
November 21, 2009 at 8:21 pm #158476caliskatariParticipantStill no info. Nobody knows of a single place that might be able to do this? Kinda strange that most everyone on this message board lives around the San Jose area yet nobody knows of a parts store which may provide those services??
November 22, 2009 at 2:12 pm #158477DavidCMurrayParticipantAny local car audio shop should be able to install your CD/DVD player. I see no reason to consider traveling to San Jose for this chore. Have you asked locally?
As to the running boards and toolbox, have you considered the possibility that no one who has read your inquiry has ever looked for them and therefore no knowledge of them exists among those readers? Or have you considered the possibility that these items are not commonly available and must be obtained from the Toyota importer, if even they have them?
If the toolbox and running boards are critical to you, maybe you should buy them online and have them shipped in. My understanding is that Arden Brink can arrange to include items like these in a container she periodically brings in from the United States.
November 22, 2009 at 6:56 pm #158478caliskatariParticipantI don’t really think the lack of responses on this thread has to do with there not being a place to put running boards on a truck. The tool box I just found on craigslist. Im sure there are plenty in San Jose, I will just find out myself while there if nobody here knows.
November 22, 2009 at 9:24 pm #158479AndrewKeymasterThis may be a silly suggestion but doesn’t Purdy Motors have this kind of stuff?
They are the largest Toyota dealership in the country
The main page is at [ http://www.toyotacr.com/ ]
The HiLux page is at: [ http://www.toyotacr.com/index_nuevos.aspx?autonum=75 ] and at [ http://www.toyotacr.com/especificaciones.aspx?autoNum=75 ]there is a ‘Catologi’ link which I am guessing are the products for this vehicle.

November 22, 2009 at 9:47 pm #158480caliskatariParticipantYeah they do, but its pretty pricey, was looking for a cheaper place to get it done.. I’ve heard from a friend of a place called Guacamaya ?.. something like that, should have that kind of stuff for a lot cheaper then Toyota. I’ll find out when Im there in SJ, I can always go to Toyota if I don’t find anything else. Thanks for the help
November 22, 2009 at 10:17 pm #158481Beach LifeMemberLlantas Panama by the stadium in Liberia has all sorts or goodies for your truck. It’s cheap because they get all their stuff from Panama plus the will install everything there for a song…
November 22, 2009 at 11:43 pm #158482caliskatariParticipantNice I’ll check that out before my trip to San Jose, thanks!
