Definitely rent a car and see the real beauty in Costa Rica. Look at previous discussions regarding renting a car. Also check with your credit card company regarding insurance coverage they might automatically be offering you partial coverage that you were not aware of. A really beautiful place to stay on Lake Arenal (not inexspensive but worth it) is La Mansion (info@lamansionarenal.com). Joey Duncan (from the U.S.) is the manager and will make your stay really special. We have stayed there three times and will be going back there this fall.
