As a monthly get away are trips to the coast very expensive. Staying in modest but nice motels. Not the highend ones.

which coast? atlantic or pacific, northern zone, central or southern? and no, it doesn’t have to be “very expensive”. it can be what you want it to be “modest but nice”.
if you are heading to papagayo or tamarindo or jaco or manuel antonio, it may be more difficult, but if you are willing to pick a less “touristy spot” you can find nice coastal rentals in cabinas, hotels or vacation rentals in the $50-$60/night range, some including breakfast!
my wife and I live in Samara, but we travel up and down the Nicoya peninsula in that price range and find great hosts and accommodations!
