Equifax Acquires Datum, the Leading Costa Rican Credit Data Company
Datum collects, synthesizes and provides consumer credit data to banks, telecommunications companies, retail and insurance businesses across Costa Rica. The company is headquartered in San Jose.
“The acquisition of this innovative, market-leading company is an indication of our commitment to the rapidly growing Costa Rican market, and further confirmation of our strategy to grow our presence internationally,” said Paulino R. Barros, Equifax President – International. “We will be able to offer Costa Rican businesses expanded products and services providing unprecedented financial insights to help them manage and grow their businesses.”
Equifax currently operates a global Shared Services Center in Costa Rica that provides IT, data processing and customer support. In 2010, the company doubled the size of the Center, where it has more than 500 employees…

“An international credit bureau will offer a new system to “predict” the level of risk and the possible future payment behavior of those who apply for credit in Costa Rica.”
(Un buró de crédito internacional ofrecerá un nuevo sistema para “predecir” el nivel de riesgo y el posible comportamiento futuro de pago de quienes solicitan crédito en Costa Rica.)
“The model works by applying a calculation method that compilesdemographic, social, employment and payment history of the citizens.”
(El modelo funciona aplicando un sistema de cálculo que compila variables demográficas, sociales, laborales y antecedentes de pago de los ciudadanos.)

Their scoring system is:
“Is a statistical model using the credit history of individuals and demographic and psychographic variables (data on age, education, marital status, etc.)..This information is dumped into a statistical formula that generates a score that indicates the likelihood of repayment of that person or group of people with similar characteristics in the next 12 months.”
(Es un modelo estadístico que utiliza el historial crediticio de las personas y variables demográficas y psicográficas (datos sobre edad, educación, estado civil, etc.). Esta información se vuelca en una fórmula estadística que genera un puntaje que nos indica la probabilidad de pago de esa persona o de un grupo de personas de similares características, en los próximos 12 meses.)
