Is there any US state or region that seems to be contributing the most retirees to CR? I know that for years this phenomena was seen in Florida with the majority of the influx from the North East. Is this pattern continuing in CR?

I certainly have detailed analytics for my website traffic and from which countries, states and cities my website visitors come from however, we do not have a way of confirming where our US visitors currently living in Costa Rica originally came from …

I graduated with a degree in Cultural Geography (many years ago), and am facinated with the population movement. I was just in Western North Carolina after about 20 years, and I noticed a significant shift in the makeup. I was just curious as to what extent the “snowbird effect” has had in Costa Rica. Scott, I would probably guess from your analytics that the majority of the traffic you get from the US East of the Mississippi is from the New England/New York, Upper Midwest and Florida(who came from forementioned areas), am I close?

Should we meet cp1436, I would be happy to share more detailed information with you, however I do not feel comfortable sharing this kind of market information in a public forum.

No scientific data to back this up but I see a lot of californians, Texans in CR.

I have not been keeping exact records but, in my 8 years of doing my tour for people thinking of living here, the following list (in order of number of moves) is where the people who have moved here are coming from:
    1. Florida
    2. Arizona
    3. Canada
    4. Texas
    5. California
    6. Other

My SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) as to why the major volume is from these States is; most of these people have moved before. They are less fearful of leaving their comfort zones.

While we did not come from one of the states that George lists, I think he’s absolutely right that folks who live there now may well have relocated before and are less fearful of making another move. I’ll bet you’d probably find a similar attitude set among retired military members and their families.

and then there are the blokes who just never want to deal with snow, ice, and cold ever again!! so factor in the northeast, the midwest, and places that have a long winter. for me, it was Colorado, Alaska, and New York. the greatest thing about Costa Rica is that i haven’t been cold since i got here 11 months ago, and if there is a chill at night during the rainy season, i can light a fire in the fireplace.

SWAG… HAHAHAHA… I like that Glundquist! I would say Florida is high on the list because of the ease of getting here, similar weather and the likelihood they have moved around more often… But I bet the real reason most of us are here is because we are all hyperactive! or ADD (Always Dreaming and Doing) or what ever else they have come up with to call dreamers and doers 😉

What happened to all those Northeasterns the locals there guessed would head the list? Based upon frequency of flights, Houston has 4 roundtrips a day to San Jose where Newark has 1 this time of year. Not scientific as those from Arizona may well fly though Houston or Dallas to San Jose.
