I wonder if any of you have had the same problems as I have when withdrawing cash in Costa Rica. I always use Bank of San Jose as they allow you to take out upto 700 USD at a time, much more than the others, so saves on the considerable commission. However 4 times now and again yesterday the ATM didnt dispense the cash but it was taken from my account overseas. Result is I have to go through the nightmare procedure of applying for the refund, last one took upto 7 weeks to get my money back after numerous phone calls, faxes etc. For this to happen so many times is crazy, theres something clearly wrong with their system as I have used different cards from different banks overseas. I have complained but its like banging your head against the wall I guess.

And for the way that they’ve treated you? Are you using the same ATM at the same location when each of these problems have occurred? Perhaps it’s a problem with the ATM itself… or part of a scam. Of a system wide computer problem that they can’t pin down!
I’ve used BN and BCR ATMs numerous times and have never had a problem. I don’t believe they allow as much to be taken out per transaction, but then again any savings you are gaining with BSJ is being removed with the time and grief you’re going through to actually get your money!
Time to take you business elsewhere if that’s possible in your neck of the woods! As Scott has pointed out many times… service is NOT something banks in CR are known for. I’ve had much better luck with the credit unions (co-ops)… but they don’t always provide all the services that one might need. In my case, they do just fine! Best of luck!

They are the only ones that allow me take out 700, other banks allow me around a quarter of that, my source Irish banks take around 14 dollars a time so a bit of a consideration. I went to different ATMs but still same result eventually. No more though, even Im not stupid enough to keep doing it now.

Or does your bank charge a flat fee for any amount taken from an ATM off shore? Perhaps you could look to have your money deposited into a more international friendly bank to avoid the fees?
