The Iphone has Wi-Fi capabilities so that we can install Skype and use when Wi-Fi is within reach.
Also you can get a online number with a USA area code that is a skype number. Look for “online numbers”
People in the USA can either call that number as a regular call from a cell or landline, or you can forward your other
Phones to that Online Skype number and all you will pay is the .02 cents per minute + whatever you would be charged
To forward the numbers to any other numbers. Of course this works only when you have a Wi-Fi connection.
Make sure you are satisfied with the call quality before passing out your new number. Also
This online number cost 6.00 per month or less if bought for more than 3 months at a time.

I’ve actually had a Skype number with a Florida area code for 2 years now & am a member of Skype Pro. It works really well for us – my family can call the number as a local call for them & I get free incoming. I bought a Philips Skype phone & only wish I had bought an additional handset for it.

I do need to be able to be reached with my cell number while I’m in Costa Rica. I may try the call forwarding, although I like the idea of having a Wi-Fi capable phone since that would allow me to use it when traveling & I wouldn’t have to boot up my laptop so often!

    Thanks for the info guys!

Lotus – Thanks for the guidance on this. I went to T-Mobile yesterday & went with a wi-fi enabled Blackberry. I’m leaving on June 11 & won’t be back in the US for over 4 months so I’m hoping it works out!

    Hi Lotus,

I’ve experimented with my phone over the weekend & I think the customer service rep misinformed me about the wi-fi. He didn’t sign me up for the unlimited hot-spot at home plan. When I turn off the mobile network & just make a call on wi-fi, it is still showing up as using my minutes. Do I need the unlimited hot spot package for this to work where I’m just connected through the router when I’m in Costa Rica?

    Jessica,
It seems your phone service provider has this cool feature. Wish mine had that option.
Some phonesbhave applications available to install. Look to see if you can get the Skype app installed
to see if you can bypass the phone feature so that the call is not made using your regular phone dial pad.
    Who is your service through?

T-Mobile…I’ll update what all I’m able to do with this. I’ll be in Costa Rica on June 11 for 4 months so I hope to have this thing fully figured out by then!

I never looked to see if my minutes were being used based on my phone stats. But I know if you are calling over wi-fi you should not be charged, unless they have made changes. When using the wi-fi you are not calling over their (t-mobile) network.

Make sure you are logged into a wifi network. My phone shows separate icon when in. I go to the options icon, select wifi setup, then follow the prompts, new connection, then scan for wifi network…then log on.

Here is some more info, it is confusing. I don’t pay for the at home hotspot, but was not charged when getting data/phone calls fron CR.

I am definitely logged into my network – when I look at my usage summary, I can see that they are logged as “hot spot” calls but they are still deducting from my minutes. From what I’ve read, I think I need the $9.99 unlimited hot spot calling plan & then it will not deduct my minutes. I signed up for a very low minute plan since I work from home & get most of my calls when in range of my router, so the $9.99 plan will be a must for me I think.

UPDATE – Ok, the Wi-Fi enabled Blackberry works! I have turned off the mobile option so I’m just on my wi-fi connection in my house. I’m able to call to the US & receive calls from the US on the cell phone without roaming/international charges. Thanks for the tip on this guys, I am stoked!!
