I’ve lived in a foreign country before so I know that perusing the local expat resources tends to be rewarding.
I’m visiting in the next week and Oct 11-18 and obviously want to make the most of my trip. Although I want to do a lot and have a great experience, I’d also really like to support organizations that run these activities that are also helping to preserve the culture and natural habitats so unique to Costa Rica too.
Any suggestions on good tours/operators who are eco-friendly and not just out to make money on tourism?
Suggestions of off the beaten track activites/festivals/etc would be appreciated too 🙂
It is very much the ‘rainy season’ here right now, so this could curtail some of your activities.
I would also add that most businesses here are like anywhere else, and that is that money is the bottom line.
Check the internet for birding info,as to where to go, if you are into that type of tourism. Some good national parks with good accommodation/tours offered or wander around by yourself.
Check in the ‘Tico Times’ which you can pick up at the airport as to what is on that week.
And since it is the rainy season, take an umbrella, raincoat, poncho, etc. and just enjoy the country and its wonderful people. I’d suggest activities such as La Paz (Waterfall Gardens) near Vara Blanca (north of Alajuela) as an all-day trip. They have monkeys, orchids, butterfly and snake enclosures, a traditional Tico farmhouse, frog house…. lots to fill a day (particularly with camera.)
We just enjoy the rainy time with friends and a good book.
I’ve lived in CR since 1992 and have written a few useful articles about Costa Rica’s diverse regions and some of the local activities that may be of interest to you at,
