I’ve read elsewhere a reference to a new WalMart store in Alajuela. Can anyone confirm its existence? If yes, can you give me directions or nearby landmarks? I know PriceSmart and AutoMercado, if that helps.
Thanks in advance.

If you know where there was an Hiper Mas in Alajuela they have all been renamed to WalMart.November 27, 2011 at 12:01 pm #202646bobrParticipant[quote=”waggoner41″]Think Hiper Mas.

miss it. They had their grand opening June21….it was packed.Bob

Thanks!
November 27, 2011 at 4:00 pm #202648bobrParticipantDavid, your right, by the airport just before the new hospital. There also seems to be a new high rise hotel being built right next to the Walmart.

And, I’m happy to report, not a shot was fired and there was no lingering odor of pepper spray. You North Americans are truly in for a culture shock.
November 29, 2011 at 4:35 pm #202651PeggySMemberRelatively new to the area & now confused (what a surprise!). I know that there is a PriceSmart just off 27 as we’re coming from Atenas & a Walmart a little further up. Is this the Walmart you’re referring to? And..is there more than one PriceSmart in the area? Thanks
November 29, 2011 at 7:00 pm #202652DavidCMurrayParticipantPeggy, you’re referring to the PriceSmart next door to CIMA Hospital and the WalMart a little closer to San Jose. All those, and the nearby EPA (think Home Depot) are in Escazu, not in Alajuela.
Juan Santamaria International Airport, where you likely arrived, is in Alajuela. Across the autopista (The InterAmerican Highway/Route 1/the General Canas) from the airport is yet another, even newer WalMart. And Alajuela now also has its very own PriceSmart and AutoMercado, as well. So it’s strictly big-time.
We live in Grecia. For us, the big box stores in Alajuela are more convenient than those in Escazu, so this is good news for us.

Thanks, David. We’re still learning & your help is very much appreciated. I think we know where the Alajuela PriceSmart is & hopefully their Walmart is easy to get to as well.

Well. Since one Walmart can put thousands of Ticos out of work, I suggest a tracking device for the new idiot box. -
