I think grb1063’s reasons were beautiful and heartfelt. I feel the same way and hope to finally find a place this year where we can live the simple life we have been craving and also contribute any way we can to our adopted community.
March 15, 2009 at 3:23 pm #195332easychannelMemberI have absolutely enjoyed what everybody has said. I want one thing to be clear that my attentions here was not how to beat the residency issue with a baby being born in CR. I never even knew about that until it was brought up.
We are looking to have a better quality of life with the business that we know. We are fortunate that we do own all of our sign equipment worth about 300K. We would like to put this to work for us wherever we decide to move to.
We where 1ist thinking of Mazitlan Mexico but with all the un rest there now and with us moving a family we don’t know if Mexico is for us. We want a great place to raise our family without worrying about how to pay for everything. We want to earn our way and do not want a hand out. To give you some perspective on us, I am 43 years old with having my 1st child at 42 and now our second child will be here in 5 months. My wife is 33. We have had our fun together and now we are looking to have an even better time with our family.
Now Some more questions.
1. How much will it cost to bring in our equipment?
“In order to work here, you must either be a citizen of Costa Rica or have legal Permanent Residency. With any other residency (rentista, pensionado, etc), you CAN own a business but you can not work in that business. You must hire Costa Rican labor and your responsibility must be limited to management of your business. No labor can be done by you that could be done by a Tico.”
2. When it says that we can not work the business but can manage and direct can I train
my new employees (Ticos)?“If you are highly skilled in an area where that job cannot be filled by a Costa Rican, the employer can apply for a work permit for one year. This is very difficult to get. Costa Rica is not a third world country. There is a large pool of highly literate and well trained people to fill nearly every job category.”
3. How do I find out if we can fall under this
4. Now that there is more information on our situation how would any of you attack the residency hurdle?
5. Is there any good websites to go to or someone I can call to get these answers personally? Thanks again for all your replies and look forward to more
March 15, 2009 at 3:48 pm #195333mixuoneMemberI have been talking to Javier Zavaleta from http://www.residencyincostarica.com
He is very nice to deal with and may be able to answer some of your questions.March 15, 2009 at 4:17 pm #195334easychannelMemberThats funny. I just found his site about 15 min ago. Thanks and I will call him on Monday. Is he in the US now
March 15, 2009 at 4:31 pm #195335mixuoneMemberI think he is in California. Residency papers need to be filed here first so that’s why I originally contacted him. His email address is javier@residencyincostarica.com and is usually pretty quick to respond. Good luck!
March 15, 2009 at 4:40 pm #195336costaricafincaParticipantAfter reading about residency, you realize that you will have to deposit a large financial outlay, for yourself and you family, and it may take a long time to get a work permit if you ever get one.
If, you could arrange to have your child here, and I realize that it was myself who told you this info, it would be the fastest, cheapest method and you would get permanent residency status for all of your immediate dependents, with no financial outlay with exception of paying a lawyer if you think you need one, and supplying all the necessary paperwork like everyone else.
Tim at http://www.residencyincostarica.com is very knowledgeable.
Yes, you can open a business immediately, under any category even as a tourist, then hire local staff who you will then train.
Maybe, you plan another child for next year…* I want to add that if any lawyer/company who represents a person applying for residency of any status, and who tells you they guarantee they can do this, within 6 months or even a year’, choose another representative.

Where to look for a place to live. We do not need a beach front property. Aplace for a Fafily of 4 and a nanny.
Any body Know a realitor that can show us some properties? We only want to lease foe a year.
What would be a good hospital to see about having our baby?
Does anybody know the cost of having a baby in Costa Rica.
If there is any other advice please let us know. Thanks Again
March 15, 2009 at 6:30 pm #195338AndrewKeymasterBearing in mind you called him on a Sunday, I would suggest that makes him even more unique…
You might notice a section on the left hand side called Costa Rica Realtors [ https://www.welovecostarica.com/public/department51.cfm ] These are Realtors that I know personally and trust. There will be no others recommended on this site or in this forum.
And San Jose is about 2 hours from the beach so living there would not work if you plan on starting a business in San Jose and lastly, the best hospitals are in and around San Jose. There is nothing comparable on either coast….

Author of ‘How To Buy Costa Rica Real Estate’March 15, 2009 at 6:45 pm #195339mixuoneMemberI spent a week in Escazu last month and put it on my list of places that I will look at more closely on my next visit. I have been reading a lot about the Santa Ana area and that seems like a nice area as well. I would take a look at some of the videos on this site that have some good info on the different areas of Costa Rica.
FYI, I contacted two of the recommended realtors and haven’t heard anything back from either one. The first was about a week and a half ago and the second one was earlier this week. I’m not complaining, just wanted to let you know.March 15, 2009 at 7:52 pm #195340costaricafincaParticipantCheck out Cinica Biblica and/or CIMA. I did read on another forum, that it cost about $1500 including a pre-natal visit. One of the recommended realtors, has written this article, and she had a baby here last year. https://www.welovecostarica.com/members/2107.cfm. She has also written articles on some other ‘Costa Rica’ forums. She also recommend somebody that handles rentals.
Santa Ana has definitely changed over the past few years, and some prefer this over Escazu. ‘Search the ‘net for ‘having a baby in Costa Rica’. There is a lot out there/here!
It may be a bit harder to find a property for a year, but many homes are up for sale, so there should be more rentals available. Neither of these areas will be inexpensive, especially for what you want.
Good luck!March 16, 2009 at 8:18 am #195341mixuoneMemberI take back the part about not hearing from the Real Estate Agents! I heard yesterday from Becky, who I had emailed last week and also from one that Scott recommended for the Santa Ana and Escazu area, Mayra. Both seem very nice and I look forward to working with them.
March 18, 2009 at 6:05 pm #195342easychannelMemberI am here in San Jose. I will let everybody know how things work out. Can anybody send to me a good realitor to work with. I will have This friday free to see properties. Here is my cell 8883-4170. Please fell fre to call and if there is anything you want to add to make this trip better for me please call.
March 18, 2009 at 8:32 pm #195343mixuoneMemberI’m so jealous! You don’t mess around, do you? I forwarded your message to Mayra Claveria, who is the recommended real etate agent for that area. Good luck!
March 18, 2009 at 10:17 pm #195344costaricafincaParticipantHope you receive good leads. Realize, that most on this forum don’t live here.
