This message is just fyi about owning a car in costa. I few months ago, BOTH my front and back license plates were stolen. I hired a lawyer to get me a new copy, but apparently he did not inform me of a crucial action to take – that you must report the theft to the police. I neglected to do so, as I was leaving for the US less than 12 hours after they were stolen.
Well, it turns out that when I went to pay my marchamo this year, it is $240 more than what I paid last year! Doing some checking at the national registry, I found a ticket in Hatillo and started to realize the problem. Its quite obvious there is some car running around with my plates in san jose now.
Whats even more ironic, is that I was getting a ride to the airport (heading to the states once again) when the rental car agent explained to me how to not only resolve the matter and look into the national registry for the tickets. So I find myself, once again, in the US trying to resolve the same matter from abroad.
Hopefully, this information helps someone else along the way… good luck.
Make sure you report the theft of your plates, especially if they take both sides!
A link to the registro site where you can lookup your placa and check for tickets:
