Here is a tricky one… How do you get to Costa Rica if you do not fly? Is there a ship or boat that someone could take? The only thing I have found are cruise ships but you only have a day or two and you have to go on to other ports of call. Driving is not an option either. I want my sister to go there with me but she can’t fly. Any suggestions?

San Jose by bus and it really was no big deal. It did take 3 days but the buses were good and the service was very good. It is a little on the “loose” side as the bus system is different connections but all in all I had no real problem and did it without incident.
Terry from TexasApril 1, 2008 at 1:37 am #190070ssureMemberI realize this is off topic for this thread but I’m wondering if you could either say more about your bus trip here or start a new thread. It sounds like an adventure! Do you speak Spanish very well? 3 days for the entire trip? I would have thought 3 days to get through Mexico. How about at the borders? Was it smooth? Did you switch buses a lot?
I’ve been wanting to drive from Canada to Costa Rica so that I could see that part of the planet from a different perspective but I was put off by some of the risks. Would you say the bus was fairly safe?
Hope to hear more. Thanks.

Maybe at some point in the future, but she lives in Florida and it would be quite a long trip. I’m surprised I haven’t been able to find a way to get there by ship. I’m going to keep looking into it though and see what I can find.
Thanks guys!April 1, 2008 at 1:49 pm #190072centaur5MemberMy girlfriend who works for Cruise Ship Centers tells me that they still have freighters who take guests. Some have guest rooms for 6-18 people. You eat with the crew and yes, its very cheap. There must be many freighters going to/from Costa Rica and Miami ?? Check it out and good luck.

General Hospital. She has become a prisoner of her thoughts she can overcome this. Maybe not for this trip but through the practice of Mindfulness she should be able to get control of this thought process that is causing her all this fear. Her phobia is of course misguided as the reality is automobile travel is much less safe, let alone taking a bus through Central America! I had a pretty serious fear of flying, before I retrained my brain with meditation and mindfulness practice, a thorough understanding of the physics involved in flight helped put my mind at ease a bit.
April 1, 2008 at 2:39 pm #190074watchdogMemberDole Corporation has a fleet of freighters that sail between Costa Rica and Florida, carrying bananas to Florida and various pieces of privately consigned freight, such as vehicles, coming back to Costa Rica. I would check with them, to see if they have a few rooms for passengers as well.
April 2, 2008 at 1:06 pm #190075kellyactMemberThank you for all of your ideas. The book and the freighters. I will look into this, travel on a banana boat sounds like an adventure in itself. Thanks all.
April 6, 2008 at 5:02 pm #190076eehorobecMemberMy husband and I have considered driving from Texas to Costa Rica. We don’t speak much Spanish, which has been one of the deterring factors to us. We thought if we could get a convoy together, we might consider driving. We want to take our dog by vehicle and would have to check on all the various country’s restrictions on animals. If you’re interested in convoying, please reply on this discussion board.
April 8, 2008 at 11:37 pm #190077snakeman2Memberhi there My name is Jose’Ilive in Florida, moving soon back to CR,maybe we could form some kind ofconvey?
April 9, 2008 at 1:37 pm #190078eehorobecMemberWe don’t speak Spanish. Do you? From the other post about the people who drove from Illinois to CR, they said that is the most important thing. From the fact that you say you are “moving back” to CR, I would infer that you do speak fluent Spanish. When are you intending to go? Do you know about taking pets across all the borders? We would be taking our boxer dog.
