Here in the U.S. there is a “Zone” system to match garden plants with
their ideal growing conditions/climate. Is there anything equivalent
to this in Costa Rica? Eventually I will want to own a home in Costa
Rica, and I hope to grow some flowers and vegetables in my garden.
Any help would be appreciated.
I wish there was but I haven’t been able to find one.
My new mountain home is nearly finished and at this elevation, we will not be able to grow any tropical fruits but in the process of burying all our fruit and vegetable waste in the garden, it has been amazing to watch the potatoes and onions sprouting out of the ground…
But it’s a great way to make friends by asking the locals what grows best in the area. We did that and the next thing we knew, the neighbors were giving us small peach and lime trees as gifts.

Thanks, Scott. I understand there are lots of nurseries around, and you can alway go and check out the plants that will work in the area.
I just found some info on zones. The zone system is based on annual Minimum temperature. According to the temperature table, most of Costa Rica would be considered Zone 11, where minimum annual temperature would be above 40 degrees F. Some of the higher elevations would probably be zone 9 – 10.
