    Hey Geegee

Smekuly is trying to indicate that you need to adapt your personality to Costa Rica. That means like many Ticos you don’t take thing so seriously.

    I like your analysis.

It’s correct. The money is there.

Now I will make a point I have made before and people always rush to shoot it down or compare it to the US by saying, “what you don’t think there are dishonest people in the US? Ha!” Same boring argument.

The bottom line here is the inherent ACCEPTANCE of dishonesty.

Am I saying there are dishonest people here. Yes!

Am I am saying that all Ticos are dishonest? No!

So let be perfectly clear so the many easily ruffled panties here are not quick to knot up.

In my opinion, per capita there are more dishonest actions here than in the US. My point is there is an overwhelming difference in how dishonesty is viewed and accepted here.

Dishonesty by others is accepted/tolerated much more so than in the US. Many Ticos just make a face or smile when they here of their neighbors dishonest actions. They don’t think less of them in general.

That is a fundamental cultural difference between the US and CR.

No I am not saying all Ticos are dishonest, and Ticos are not good people, and all the other words panty twisted posters here wish to put in my mouth.

It is obvious to me that the ACCEPTANCE of the dishonest BY THE HONEST PEOPLE here perpetuates dishonesty.

The biggest contribution to this is the lack of conviction for crime.

Here is a major reason that crime continues to soar.

Once you have been charged and are in the legal system and you think you will be convicted, you have a chance to pay your way out of jail.

Example: So you have committed fraud. At a reconciliation meeting, you can make a deal with the plaintiff/victim to pay him money to drop the criminal charges. In the US the district attorney may or may not chose to let you off by compensating the victim. Here it is routine.

So the offenders of white collar crime know that even if they are caught, they can pay their way out of jail before ever going there.

That is the kind of thinking that perpetuates crime.

    Also the poorly educated attorneys.

There was a recent article about the lack of competence judges here and they gave a test to become a judge and there was something like 100 applicants and NONE passed the test. As I recall the highest score was like 70%.

That is how poor student/colleges are at learning and teaching.

The issue of how the government is going to protect the citizenry comes down to the value of honesty.

Ticos are cynical; they see the dishonest get away with literally murder so they do not value honesty as Americans do. Most Latin countries don’t.

I wish I didn’t have to say this and it relates to medical service here too and that is that Ticos cheat their way through school.

    I know this personally.

They come out of university poorly educated.

One medical student stated to my acquaintance, “ I paid for my education. I deserve my diploma!”

Another one said after talking about cheating his way through pharmacy school that “After I graduate I am going to have to take a course so I know what I am doing.”

Can you belive it. This woman is going to spend over 4 years in college and she thinks she is going to “take a course” after graduating so she can understand what she has been supposedly studying for over 4 years.

    Mind numbing? Yes.

    Welcome to CR Geegee.

That is what smeky was trying to impart to you. If you don’t have an open mind and relax about how things are here, you won’t last.

Bottom line is cheating and dishonesty is tolerated here in a way that Americans cannot understand.

Every time you see a person with a degree here, let me tell you many times it means virtually nothing. You better look at results which defines competency rather than credentials.

The second bottom line is it is cultural. Accepting dishonesty by others and taking very little seriously here are the building blocks of Costa Rica dysfunction.

Living in Costa Rica is like having a spouse with a borderline personality disorder. The highs are high. But most of the time the relationship is dysfunctional.

That is why I say do not if you don’t have too, trust professionals here. That means doctors, pharmascits, attorneys, etc.

“you blame hollywierd for promoting stupid, vulgar movies, yet YOU are the one who watched them. i wouldn’t waste two seconds of my time with movies like that, so stop patronizing that which you rail against.”

First its “You, you, you” More personal attacks. Next you always twist my posts and try to put words in my mouth by your constructions.

Whose friends are the Hollywood writers that lambast stay at home motherhood, depict women as dishonorable sluts, and men as loser, weak idiots. Takes one to know one.

You cry out that it’s me me me when in reality its you you you illustrated by you anti male remaks below. – feeling guilty are we?

“and freaks from all over the world have been coming to CR to indulge in the hotel del rey.”

I am sure your are not talking about women.

“after they make him a eunuch!”

Castration? The epitome of man hating?

I am sick of women hating men as demonstrated by the above statements.

“and don’t think muslims are such innocents either. that statement just shows how little you really know about that culture.”

    Also an Islamaphobe?

Where did I write Muslims are innocents? I guess you are an expert on Islam or maybe just an under accomplished over confident woman spouting off from the security found behind your computer screen. I doubt you talk to men in public the way you write to one, or maybe you do? Which illustrates my point about your prejudice.

Most Ticas are very respectful towards men. I bet that irks you.

I am always going to support men treated fairly, stay at home motherhood and women with honorable values. So get used to it.

Costa Rica has honorable women, traditional values that you and your hollywood cowhorts wish to pervert through man hating attitudes and the denigration of honorable, traditional female behavior.

“you only THINK money buys you better care. it’s not necessarily so.”

Yeah well I only think money buys me a better house and a better car and better clothes and better schools and better dental but its not necessarily so.

Well if you are in a 2000 ton building crumbled by an earthquake it is not necessarily so that you will be killed. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

For me I’ll err on the side of the best money can buy. Funny how that money stuff can bring out the excellence in Americans in America. But it isn’t necessarily so right, yeah right, but the odds are by far in your favor.

By the way I believe Scott has private worldwide coverage insurance, I may be wrong. Does that say something?

“probably” leaves a lot of wiggle room…

I don’t doubt for one second you would want to be in a comfortable private room rather than a dorm and I don’t doubt for one second that you would want to choose your doctor rather than get who ever is on duty. And I don’t doubt for one second that you would want to have not only an abundance of pain or other medications but the latest and best non-generic type. Caja! yeah right.. err I mean “probably…” If its your leg being amputated I am sure you want to be sufficiently medicated, unlike Mr Warneke (Hospital Mexico).

Hospital Metropolitan would probably be my first choice in an emergency. I felt like a hostage a Cima after my emergency surgery there and the staff attending the nursing station was rude. Lots of big egos, don’t ask me why (and the food sucked) although my surgeon who was an older doctor that cut his teeth in the Caja was personable and seemed caring. I am not saying that adequate doctors do not exist here buy health care is a complicated equation at best and I want as many variables on my side as possible.

    Good question.

As I understand it, any hospital must “stabilize” you. That means you have to be in condition to be moved to a caja hospital if you are not already in one. There I believe you will be treated and released. As to what extent I do not know…

I am not implying that helping out in CR is a bad thing.

    Just looking a little deeper.

Sure treat the symptom but also realize and do something about the cause.

Also the vast majority of people on this site are from the US.

    Apologies to the PC police.

Its well understood that what happens in the US is of practical consequence to Costa Rica such as tourism, and yes not all tourists are from the US but if you don’t count Nicaraguans I would think the vast majority are Americans and that the overall amount of money spent here most is by far spent by Americans.

    Maravilla,

Sure anything can happen anywhere but,

If you were seriously ill and had to see a doctor, where would you go? Caja or private care.

A direct answer of “Caja or private” will sufice.

I think you will chose to dance around this question. That should tell the original poster something.

Look, like I said, if you are un insurable or don’t have the resources, then the Caja is a God Send, but the so is Medi-cal in the US and its free. I have to pay the Caja. And I use it but only for emergency or low risk situation such as blood work.

The bigger question to me is if you can afford it, which would you choose?

I have not heard one answer yet.

Or if they both were available at the same cost and terms, I doubt few would chose caja care.

My Tico neighbors cringe when told a simple ultra sound will take a year.

    Come on.

Sure there are some that can get in front of the line because they have connections. But what does that say about the system? Doesn’t that just move someone else further back? That type of uncaring behavior is commonly accepted when it comes to Costa Rican government systems where it seems that most Ticos feel they are being cheated so its cheat or be cheated.

The Caja is underfunded and understaffed.

How many operations were delayed because of a strike?

How long did doctors go unpaid in yet another crisis a while back?

The caja is what it is; to me it is a semi functional safety net with a lot of holes.

Take your chances. I prefer a net with fewer holes.

Hey I wish the Caja was great. It would save me extremely high premiums. But I think that the original poster deserves a realistic view of the caja.

It’s a broken system by most accounts

Terri this is a disputed issue. Some love the Caja some hate it. I have had mixed results. 80% of the time I hate it. If I had to rely on it only, I would feel totally vulnerable.

The question one should ask of anyone who says the caja is great is “if you could have private insurance that allowed you to choose your doctor with the same benefits as Caja insurance, which would you choose.” Unfortunately, most who say the caja is great/good are those who cannot afford private insurance.

Now I am not slamming those who cannot afford private insurance.

I am just saying they have a prejudice because that is what they can afford.

It’s better than nothing but there have been so many literal horror stories. If you want to know one of the most tragic than look up Richardson and Warneke. Richardson withered away with little attention until death and Warneke had several leg amputations some while severely under medicated and without adequate anticoagulation medications that could have prevented the amputation.

Look, my opinion is that most Ticos dislike Americans. Also they think all Americans have money so they look at you as cheap if you use the caja and have a “what are you doing here sucking up the resources of our underfunded over streached system when you have money for private care” look on their face.

Well you are at their mercy, so think about it. And this culture takes very little seriously and hardly strives for excellence. So if you are looking for excellence in anything (besides weather, drinking, sex and gossip) you came to the wrong place. Yes a few Ticos are very good at what they do and strive to be good. I have never met one that strives to be innovative and excellent. If I go under the knife, I want someone who defines himself by his excellence.

I had an x-ray after a tree limb broke and bashed me and it was relatively fast and confirmed I had no fractures. So that was useful and I believe paid for my years worth of MANDATORY Caja payments. Would I go under the knife of a Caja/Costa Rican surgeon playing God to a gringo?

    No way.

Any surgery is a gamble but if I was seriously ill I will use my international coverage to high tail it back to a developed country and take my chances there. No doubt in my mind.

That includes the touted private hospitals here too. I had an emergency surgery in Cima and the jackass anisthiologist collapsed my lung.

In my opinion: Ticos are children playing grown-up games.

I have been here a long time, your mileage may vary.

Where are they located? Does anyone actually know them face to face?

They had quoted some disputed study and I see they have since taken it off their site.

I am all for helping but I am against sensationalism. Look at all the cultural casualities we Americans have endured at the hands of Hollywood.

The mental wounds sustained back home are huge in comparisson to any tragedy Costa Rica may have suffered anywhere at anytime.

Even one tragedy is too many. But look to the source and treat the cause rather than the wound and then you will prevent more wounds that you could have ever treated.

And what supports the cult of consumerism? TV/Movies do. I just saw Kill my Boss and Bad Teacher in the last month and I have never seen such foul mouthed authentically filthy and disgusting language movies. Women with slutty values and men portrayed as bumbling fools.

They made that idiot basketball player who married a kardashian into the most hated player in the NBA. Why? Because traditional people hate Hollywood whores.

Israel is said to have more brothels/whores per capita than any place on earth and Hollywood has more perverts in power than any place on earth. I think Hollywood values have created what the progressives want to happen: the destruction of traditional male female roles and family through the legality of being able to marry your Emu.

Whatever happened to that committee that screened movies, denounced such trashy behavior, and perverted thoughts.

Hollywood created the kardashians. Their slutty values and overall hedonism has made them the poster child of those who finance and write such vulgarity, and the epitome of everything that is wrong with Hollywood. They are fostering the decadence that eats at the foundation of the US. They are the rot and scum of the earth.

Those at the heart of the perversion (people rioting over sneakers) are the writers and producers. Next are the greedy actors like Jenifer Asinine (or whatever her name is) for agreeing to utter such filth.

The progressive Hollywood set and their extremist fanatics are moving into Costa Rica preaching their “its hip to be gay” and “disrespect/abuse you idiot man” and don’t be a “stupid stay at home mother” and “dress like a slut” philosophy to the point that you will see Ticos rioting over sneakers soon.

When the traditional family structure breaks down, the nation follows. Families teach values. From where else are you going to get your values? Hollywood? You think Quepos is bad. Hollywood is where the mega rich big time perverts are.

Is there really any wonder why the Muslims hate us for spreading mental and visual pornography around the world. And you are all in arms over the pervert mayor in small town Costa Rica when the biggest perverts in big town USA are corrupting the world…

Americans should think about the plank of wood in their own eye before crying out about the speck of dust in their neighbor’s eye.

One thing that keeps the Samara/Nosara area from being complete is the absoltley terriblle Caja hospital in Nicoya and the overall lack of medical care.

I went there for an emergency (kidney stone) and they had no bed and the place was hardly full. They gave me a drip with toridol and saline solution. Look, this is how I played it: if you are going to be in pain or uncomfortable its best to be at home rather than a stark barebones facility that seemed to be uncaring and completely unorganized. The bathroom was gross gross gross. So I can only imagine that the rest of the hospital was equally dirty.

I doubled down on pain meds and yea I drove 7 hours back to san jose half way nodding out in sever and barley tolerable pain. I force drank liters of water and stopped several time to nod off. I was desperate or I would have never risked my life and that of others. Desperate people do desperate things. What a nightmare.

This was not my first stone so I knew what to expect. That is why I knew I could make it home.

However, if it was someones first experience with a kidney stone, well it feels as if you are going to die of blunt wide pain. My first time I was horrified.

I can only hope to never imagine someone passing a stone in that area of the nicoya.

A great place to vist but don’t have an emergency there!!!!

Well Thanks Miss Kity. Say Hi to the marshal for me.

Finally a sensible woman who appears to be traditional promotherhood with a healthy respect for men. Thank God you don’t think that promotherhood is anti woman.

You know I thought that I was the only one in this group that had the common sense to see that our culture is being overtaken by extremist such as Maravilla and Sprite.

You would think that people would appreciate the soldiers that war to protect them. You would think that people would appreciate the honorable women that stay at home and create a loving home and strong character and develop morality in their children.

Well it’s obvious by her remarks and the latest remark “some man” that Maravilla demeans the value of fatherhood and men in general, the same men that eliminated Osama Bin Landen and lets go full circle as her Hollywood cronies were most likely responsible for creating the appearance of an organized resistance to a misperception of American culture. A misperception created from all the mind polluting immoral crap produced by Hollywood and spread around the world.

Hollywood morals supported by some subvert Americans who wish to keep a traditional family intact. No gay marriage or marrying your goat. And here in Costa Rica where most women are still feminine and value motherhood the mind polluters mask feminist extremism as “protecting women’s rights.” But the perverted femanazis promote dressing up as a Hollywood hooker and slandering priest in front of a church and their children grow up distrustful, man hating, promiscuous femanazis.

Sprite, you and your extremist anti American anti capitalist views do little to mask you sour grapes over a sexless existence and overall depressed vision of the world.

Miss Kitty – I hope that your style of woman that teach their children that they don’t have to dress like whores or act like a man to compete in the job world win out.

Women are women and men are men each with their unique roles and the gender blur where men are femazied and women are masculine is the end of traditional society. All brought on by perverted people in places of power such as Hollywood, and by testosterone – less men who would rather relinquish their masculinity than stand up for themselves. Applauded by the likes of some and represented by the likes of others. Sad and creepy indeed.

Man hating femanazis and subversive gringos that hate their own country are two types of gringos one should think twice about before socializing.

Well the many if not most Ticas I know feel US women are not feminine and don’t want to be anything like them. Thank God. For the ones that value the family and are honorable enough to sacrifice and I did say sacrifice, and are unselfish enough to sacrifice and I did say sacrifice to make a home warm and loving I salute you. You wana be feminazi and card carrying femanazi I wish you “well whatever Sprite said is what I wish you!” jajaja

I am sure vailed prostitutes and other less dedicated to family and home and God will never understand traditional families as they are too selfish to ever be a traditional loving mother and wife. Watch some more twisted television.

Why are you three women so anti-motherhood?

I guess I must consider the source eh?

I did not know eunuchs could be femanazis! But I guess so? Learn something new everyday eh?

No more times for mind that hate and think men are the evil oppressors. OAO
