Ticos’ are not blind and their middle class and up have traveled outside the national country to other places, they marvel at the security, roads and services when they my wife’s family visit us in Florida and they compare the good things and the bad too.

But they have BIG problems with the Economic and Financial growth that has happened in the last 20 years. EPA, the hardware store is (foreign) Colombia owened and so are many other Costa Rican corporations.

Besides there is a large amount of outside $$ invested, some clean and others NOT. What I found incredible is the Arias administration opening the door of CR to the Chinese Gov. and all for a National Stadium (Chinese workers and Chinese materials) and I thought that if a CR worker could do any work a foreigner could not take his job?? figure that one out.

In the meantime; the mes in el puente Virilla the new Autopista (Sol), el puerto de Limon with the Dutch proposing a new one $480,000 million $$. The hydro plant at REVENTAZON which will cost 1,200 MILLION $$.

LOT’s of $$ are going into CR because it is a very secure investment. Try doing that in Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador. Only Panama and CR are safe to invest in Central America.

The innocent CR we knew 20 years ago is being transformed by massive outside investment and with these actions come some good and bad consecuences.

And if you live in CR get ready to face the reality of the changes that are there and coming your way, some will be ugly by your standards.

    more to come

I traveled from Desamparados to Tibas 2 weeks ago and went over a bridge and below the river was littered with all kinds of trash.

Saw some vacant (empty) lot’s with all kinds of construction leftovers.

Around LA Rotunda next to “El Parque de la Paz” was the same thing, trash dumped at night in full view for everyone to see.

The growth “EXPLOSION” that CR has gone through caught the Govm. by a complete surprise.

Amazingly; the Ticos’ understand this problem and are slowly demanding the Covm. to fix these and other ones but the internal deficit is growing every year.

The answer the “Diputados” have is to raise the sales tax from 13% to 15%.

just spent 3 weeks in San Jose, Desamparados to be exact and I LOVED IT!!!!

you live within your limits in Paris, London, New York but expect the same things in JACO

you chase the dream you don’t have in your countries and expect it in another one, try NIRVANA

    “Con mucho Gusto”

    “Si Senor”

It is a simple fact that goes a long way. If you move from Canada during the winter months to Florida you will think you found “Paradise” but completely different when moving to another country.

Different culture, religion, food, government, language, etc.. but you can overcome these things by adapting and understanding them (go native) or try to be the UGLY N. American, trying to buy yourself with dollars to find that comfort zone you want.

Don’t take your attitude (US style) for granted in Costa Rica, things work completely different in the Pura Vida land.

Tico’s will admire you more if you display a simple attitude and not BOOST or try to compare your salary, Macmansion, status with them. They already know you have 1 or 2 cars in the USA a house with hot water in all bathrooms with a walking closet in your masterbed room, the $$ to travel, meaning (a good job).

You will go a long way by being HUMBLE with them.

    well hot dog!!

being married to a Tica with an extended family that has reaches all the way to ICE, OIJ, Customs, Casa Amarilla, etc. has it’s advantages

If I have a problem in CR it is solved in a NY minute, LOL

LINES?? in the Bank are a way of life in CR but my wife can put up with this while chatting with the person in front or on the back. It is just natural for them but for me it is a Aleve moment.

Waiting for a CAB is a no brainer, call from the restaurant, BANK or Hotel inside, don’t expose yourself.

Special they are if you find a special CR person and that is not hard to find.

If you made an investment like buying property in CR, I bet you you will not say “What a mistake” I made.

RENT and find out if it is for you.

    My take:

The company that hires you makes all the arrangements, be them in house or outside.

IF this was not the case why send advisors to work in other countries.

I can be sent by my company to work in the North Pole and the Company has to make all the legal arrangements.

On another note; my daughter works for an airline and fly’s to different countries, sometimes she has to stay over and the company has Hotel accomodations for these personel. She does not need a Visa but a Passport.

If Intel or WalMart sends you to China or Australia, it is the company’s responsibility to make ALL the paperwork not the person working for the company.

Maybe this is another example; you join the Peace Corps and they send you to CR. Do you need to contact the country they send you??

    Both are wrong:

Costaricabill: look at the ratio of changes in the US Congress, they FLIPPED to the GOP. You think they cannot flip again??? to the other side.

They are sitting on PIN’s and Neddles, all of them.

Scott: IF!! the US dollar is not traded anymore would you go with the Chinese Yen. Think hard about this one, because it is not really backed by the Federal Reserve but by the industries created in the USA like GM, Microsoft, John Deer, Kraft, Budweiser, etc..

Keep thinking that the USA is on oxygen support and Costa Rica is one of the evolving country in the world. I hear you from a FAR distance but the rice is cooked in the USA to this day, maybe some far away day it will be from another country but until it happens you keep on eating GALLO PINTO.

I will not, would not trade this country for any other with it’s problems and let me tell you, my wife is visiting her family in Costa Rica as I type this besides that I will be there in March 2011 for some dental work.

I don’t deny we have problems in the USA but don’t even tell me that Paradise is in Costa Rica.

Many posters in this forum ASK, what is the exchange rate going to be in the XYZ future compared to the dollar then why is it that they don’t ask what is the colon be to the US dollar.

You expats from the USA are there for the grace of what you did back here and pray that this country is still standing another 200 years because your children and grand, great will be living here. Will they have the same opportunities you had, will they be able to work for 40 years and be able to migrate too another country to retire, comfortably.

You made it here the HARD way and now live the soft one, well good for you but what about the next 1,2,3 generations. Never heard of an EXODUS from Costa Rica people comming to the USA to retire in comfort.

Get real and get serious, we have a problem and it is not confined to borders but to the world economy.

    interesting but a FALSE proposition

you want to be in the US Senate and then commit HARAKIRI!! then go ahead and even say SS should be eliminated

the gov. is the custodian of this fund but WE let them borrow against it and NOONE said anything

now everyone is screaming “BLOODY” murder

while we type about this issue read what R. Gates has proposed to do to the US military budget, (hint) reduce it during the next 4 years

now that is a novel idea

just recently Mr. Prez had to give in and extend the tax cuts to all making over $250,000 just so that those unemployed could get an extention of these benefits

and now he is thinking of eliminating SS??

Scott, I know you like US dollars but I also know you don’t like the US

    am I wrong???

    A better Mouse Trap:

my wife has a nephew, 20 year old kid that loves soccer and has some friends his age, 19-24

they came back from a MEJENGA, street soccer for some refreshments

SURPRISE!!! out of the 20 that came for a drink, 6 of them belong to the OIJ

and those 6 left 6 guns in the newphew’s room

enought firepower to take out and small Army and the testestore level to match it

small price to pay, $10.00 worth of water and juice compared to an ADT alarm

    Happy Holidays:

The police force in Tampa, Florida warns you of leaving your purchases in your car in the parking lot of the Mall in full view but some people don’t get it.

The easiest SCORE for a thief is to watch from a distance while you load your presents in a car and then leave it unattended.

There was a story about a woman walking the parking lot of a Mall with a dog. Innocent looking woman and the dog also but she was looking for the presents left inside the car. She would signal her accomplises and “POOF” your purchases were stolen. All you had left was a broken rear window glass.

These are called SOFT crimes since no weapons are used, you steal with one and it is a 3-5 year Jail sentence if cought, steal without a weapon and you might get probation.

If I were a thief and looked down the road and saw 10 cars, which one do you THINK would catch my eye!! the run down 1980 Toyota or the 2010 one?? Which one is worth my trouble??

Your story could have ended in a different note; from looking at a 9MM to being shot by one.

Live and learn, you lost nothing worth keeping in those circumtances but gained an invaluable experience.

the FEDs’ made a loan and transfered money to buy a secure debt from big banks not from Joe six pack, these are some o9f the biggest players in the market besides the automakers

they did not PRINT money since what they did was ASSUME a debt from the Banks and ask for collateral PLUS interest, NO money was printed or transfered

a debt was paid with a promise to transfer that debt to another person without any liability and with interests to be paid

the SPIN factor on this episode is hilarious and some well studied ecomonists are working on this problem

should I listen to a post in WLC to give me the real answer??

the government, automakers, banks and politicians are all in “CAHOTS” to bring down the US economy!! and the country

by the way the interest collected on the TARP program was close to $300 billion and 75% has been recovered already

whre is the real 13 trillion dollar debt with this bailout since the internal TOTAL debt is 13 trillion

are you telling me we are now 26 trillion in debt?? all of a sudden

next; falasy, SSA will not exits after 2035, then we do as the Eskimos did when they had reached the point of FAMIINE

collect all the old people and throw them into the frigid sea for them to die and not be a burden to their society

well!! we will collect 70 million old people and throw then from the Grand canyon in Colorado

    ridiculous!! thinking

    are you kidding !!

have to take a break and read some other thread, this one is going NO-WHERE

    Scott:

Politicians really listen when they are voted down and they heard a murmur in 2010

wait until 2012 and they will hear a “ROAR”

just look at the POISON pill the UK had to swallow

look at France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and other countries where the medicine has been POTENT and very bitter to swallow but swallow they will!!!

and look at Peru where the retirement age has been lowered to 58
the tide is turning but the politicians in Washington DC still don’t get it

these are interesting times to watch in the USA and the real CHANGE is comming or we will all sink

this is a Wikileaks revolution, which starts small and GROWS’, expands’ and cannot be stopped

stay tuned!! for part 2, should be interesting to watch
