It may have changed – and I certainly hope it has – but I don’t believe that home-schooling is legal in Costa Rica…

Sorry to be rude but do you really think that gardeners and housekeeper in Costa Rica understand currency fluctuations?

    Few business people do…

You start paying them in dollars and their wives and husbands will be telling them that you are probably ripping them off…

It’s been my experience that most gardeners and housekeeper in Costa Rica don’t have a bank account so where do they change those dollars into colones?

Answer: In a place where they’ll probably get ripped off with the exchange rate which is not what you want.

Don’t complicate your life! Pay them what they expect to be paid in the money that they expect to be paid in …

    Just my dos colones …

Perhaps I’m employing over – qualified gardeners and housekeepers…. they seem pretty sharp and have a good understanding of the colon/dollar exchange rate and how it impacts them….they also have bank accounts… perhaps I’m paying them too well! I’m thinking perhaps I should cut off the free wifi and dumb them down a bit! I knew introducing them to the Internet was the beginning of the end!!! LOL
Just don’t show them the article in today’s La Nacion about the pensions that some of the diputados are earning in Costa Rica…

208 ex-legislators who are – on average – earning a pension of 5,000,000 colones per month (US$9,206.74) and which automatically increases by 30% (Yes! THIRTY per cent) per year!

According to the article, nobody could join this ‘plan’ after 1995 but even so 208 people earning $9,206.74 per month is a total of US$1,915,001.92 per month just for this small group…

    Mind-boggling!

My gut feeling tells me that there is some sort of a news blackout in effect with regards to this tragic event. I would not like to speculate more …

Since this is an ongoing investigation and a very disturbing state of affairs for the families involved I would ask that we are very careful and respectful with what we say here in this thread.

I am also a believer in biohacking and own the BioHackingDigest.com domain name for use at some stage in the near future …

As we all know growing marijuana in Costa Rica is illegal so I would not of course encourage anyone to do that.

Having said that I do know the people behind the campaign to make ‘medical marijuana’ legal here and they have made a lot more progress than I thought they would…

The coconut oil I buy is from Ecococr.com and you can see where they sell their products here.

I buy coconut oil from the Green Center in Santa Ana which I know is expensive compared to what you can pay en el campo.

My wife buys frozen blueberries from PriceSmart which she uses in her smoothies …

    Hope that helps.

Just to make life interesting …

    According to Central America Data.com:

The firm Mel Group has submitted a proposal to finance construction of a new international airport, which includes a 4 kilometer long runway and a 30 thousand square meter building. The investment for this project, which will be located in Limon, is about $700 million.

Crhoy.com reports that “… The proposal made by Mel Group is to develop the work in Saborio Matina, about 25 kilometers from the port of Moin …The new terminal would measure ??36 thousand square meters and have a 4 kilometer long runway. “

Carlos Segnini, Minister of Transport and Public Works, said that “… In the coming weeks the government will examine this proposal and analyse and another proposal made last year by the Chamber of Tourism of Limón and development partnership from the province for an airport in the province.

“If” this were to happen, this would be HUGE for the Caribbean (neglected ) coast of Costa Rica…

Having said that, I find it very strange indeed that I can NOT find any other reputable sources that speak of this substantial project and also can not find any data on the ‘Mel Group’.

Good point but at today’s prices $56,000,000 doesn’t come close to acquiring the land necessary and building a new “international” airport…

Funny enough, there is an editorial in today’s La Nacion newspaper by Luis Carlos Araya Mongre the Ex-Deputy and ex-Vice Minister about the new airport:

El nuevo aeropuerto metropolitano y el futuro del Juan Santamaría

In the article he refers to the best weather conditions for planes taking off and landing and he does refer to Orotina (I don’t know if he owns land there) however, I would like to remind our readers again that they have been talking about a “new international airport” in various locations since the late 1970s and in all of these discussions NOBODY has yet to explain where the $100+ million dollars will come from to build this…

I honestly don’t this is going to happen for a very long time ….

You might also want to read my article – written nearly 9 years ago – entitled:

In another ‘infrastructure’ related article in La Nacion there’s one sentence about the highway to San Carlos that’s also important for us to read:

Original version in Spanish: “La carretera a San Carlos se concibió en 1969 y la conclusión está prevista para junio del 2016 (47 años), destaca el informe.”

English: “The road to San Carlos was conceived in 1969 and completion is scheduled for June 2016 (47 years), the report said.”
