You might want to read “Costa Rica Condos – Advantages of Gated Communities: which you will find at
And again remember that a ‘condo’ in a ‘gated community’ could be just about any kind of a home here from a small $100K home to million dollar homes…

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymasterThe value of your condo will depend on the value of neighbouring condos, maintenance of the common grounds and you could make a lot of improvements to a condo but still not be able to sell it for more than the others in the same development.
Whereas a stand alone home will be very much more difficult to compare and should you make improvements, they will have a higher ‘added value’ than they would in a condo. Having said that, remember that in Costa Rica a ‘condo’ could be $100K apartment or a $780,000 stand alone home.
I would not even consider the mortgage aspects of this as this is changing and will certainly change over the next 25 years.

Author of How To Buy Costa Rica Real Estate Without Losing Your CamisaPS. Forgive the very rushed reply as I am in the process of moving right now.
AndrewKeymasterScott’s not paying anybody because nobody is paying me… Sob… Sigh! Nah! Only kidding. The site is paying it’s way…
There are so many gated communities in Costa Rica for the very same reason there are so many in any country, please see
Sorry to be a brute but if I were you, I wouldn’t listen to your husband’s opinion about Costa Rica any more 🙂 How can anyone (spouses included) give you their opinion of an area if they have never even been there?
I know Santa Ana very well and it is growing rapidly. You may also wish to search for “Santa Ana” on this site and you will find a few articles and a video of the area.

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymaster“Hype” is “hype” and is rarely ‘real’.
Sounds like this is a decision that you need to make for yourself.
There have been many times where the wife or husband loved Costa Rica but their partner did not… Sounds like your husband prefers the city whereas you might prefer the country.
Costa Rica is not for everyone.

One can only imagine how much worse that will be in the future as we see generation after generation who consider it ‘normal’ to take half a dozen different prescription drugs each day.
The pharmaceutical corporations are making a killing but they are also actually killing their customers (no joke) and many of them even know that…
I have probably taken 4-6 acetaminophen this year – that’s it! And I only ever do that when I am in very bad pain.

Pharmaceuticals in Waterways Raise Concern
Effect on Wildlife, Humans Questioned“Academics, state officials and environmental advocates are starting to question whether massive amounts of discarded pharmaceuticals, which are often flushed down the drain, pose a threat to the nation’s aquatic life and possibly to people.”

December 21, 2006 at 2:16 pm in reply to: US companies outsourcing their operations offshore #180373AndrewKeymasterMaravilla would you please send me the source for the “150,000,000 scripts for antidepressants/antipsychotics” information?
You have (again) given me more food for thought ….
Merry Christmas

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymasterThere is quite a bit of information about ‘residency’ in this forum, there is a lot of mis-information everywhere and the Costa Rican immigration department is just total chaos at the moment so it’s not easy getting it right.

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymasterIf you are looking for amazingly priced furniture, you must visit the Aliss stores.
There is one on the East (highway that goes towards Cartago) side in the TerraMall and also one about 300M from MultiPlaza in Escazu

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymasterHOORAY! For Maravilla!
AndrewKeymasterIt is much less but you do have to shop around.
I bought a pair of glasses for my maid about six months ago but unfortunately she lost them.
The lady I deal with in Ciudad Colon (20 minutes west from Escazu) has treated me wonderfully and her prices for both glasses and lenses seem to be very competitive.
Her name is Raquel Robles and her telephone number is 249-0038

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymasterI have suffered three major “cons” in my life which cost me a significant amount of money one way or the other.
In New York, Grand Cayman and here in Costa Rica but they were all US attorneys that caused this…

WeLoveCostaRica.comAndrewKeymasterYou certainly should have established the price BEFORE leaving your laundry with these people but you were absolutely ripped off – big time!
More accurately, you were ‘clothes-napped’ and you paid a $60 ransom to have them returned safely to you.
To put things into perspective, I pay my maid $2 per hour and I am overpaying her so if you paid $60 for that small load of laundry which would have taken less than two hours to wash, dry & fold…. Yeech! Another “learning experience.”

WeLoveCostaRica.comDecember 18, 2006 at 10:55 am in reply to: US companies outsourcing their operations offshore #180362AndrewKeymasterBut the demographics, basic economics and the facts say otherwise.
Over the last twenty-five years, median family income has risen by only 18% clearly showing that the median family income in the US (in real terms) is declining and NOT rising. Yes! As always the income of the top 1% has gone up by 200%.
In actuality, half of all Americans make more than $44,000, and half make less.
Many people expect the income levels of the average worker in the USA to continue falling and when income levels drop off more, then we will see real estate foreclosures at levels not seen since the great depression. It’s not going to be pretty.
So no! I would disagree that “over time the tide will raise all ships.”
It would appear that incomes in countries like China and India (which are obviously extraordinarily low in comparison with the first world) will indeed rise but the median income in the US and most European countries will probably continue to fall.
