I was thinking about last night deb at 1225am as a three minute earthquake rattled the windows of my apartment in Escazu and the vibrations woke me up.

I’m in the fourth floor penthouse so tend to feel them more than some people. Nothing was damaged except the fact that it took me hours to get back to sleep..

Now that you put it that way, I am not sorry at all.

This is a Discussion Forum where people D-I-S-C-U-S-S things and not where our VIP Members spend their valuable time giving directions to people.

I would strongly encourage you to visit another country because it sounds like Costa Rica might be a bit of a challenge for you.

On the old WeLoveCostaRica.com site we did have an article about the AGUINALDO and who was entitled to it but it was “lost” in the transition to this new system.

I’ll try and make sure we get one done…

Sorry but this is NOT correct and this is not just ‘opinion,’ it’s the law.

Ticos are NOT “generally treated in a borderline criminal manner by employers and have very little recourse to do anything about it.”

It has been my experience that Costa Rican Labor Laws are VERY much in favor of the employees and will nearly always rule in favor of the employee.

But just to verify this for you, I asked my good friend and attorney Jose Rafael Fernandez who said that:

“The person who wrote that does not have the least idea of what he is saying. Labor law in Costa Rica is ruled by the principle in dubbio pro operario that is in doubt must rule in favor or the employee. And that is very much strictly applied by the courts.”

As you will have seen on this site, “if” you are planning on employing anybody in Costa Rica, you really must understand Costa Rica Labor Laws (or have an attorney that does) BECAUSE the laws are so much in favor of the employee.

I can only assume that you are referring to undocumented and illegal workers being “treated in a borderline criminal manner by employers” because this could not apply to legally employed Costa Ricans.

I’m sorry but this is a Discussion Forum and since there are a million different ‘directions’ people could ask for, we’ll have to stop this here.

We will NOT be giving any more directions in the Discussions Forum.

I don’t believe so. I believe that you must pay your property taxes to the municipality in which your home is located in your case, somehwer in Guanacaste.

My question would be ‘why exactly’ is your ‘Property Manager’ refusing to do such a simple task? If he refuses to so something as simple as that, what is he actually doing for you as ‘property manager?’

It took me less than 15 minutes in the local office the last time I paid…

It was pointed out to me some time ago by one of Wellington’s attorneys that although there is a very close relationship between the two companies and the people involved… Wellington Trading Group S.A. and the Wellington Asset Management are two different Costa Rica corporations.

The good news is that it’s 1,500 additional jobs and I think Costa Rica Labor Laws are such that the employees will get a better overall deal with significantly more benefits here than they would back in the USA.

I believe the malaria is confined to an area on the Caribbean, the cold front was a surprise for sure, shootings are never a surprise anywhere and as for earthquakes… According to La Nacion, we have over 1,000+ small earthquakes every year in Costa Rica.

You can see more about earthquakes in Costa Rica at RED SISMOLÓGICA NACIONAL (ICE-UCR) at

But deb! You forgot about the active volcanos of Costa Rica?

    And don’t forget dengue fever…

And the dozens of North American scam artists who can’t wait for you to get here and sell you a piece of mangrove swampland because of the “new international airport” they are (NOT) about to build…

All my books and directories are packed at the moment ready to move but all of the churches should be listed in the telephone books.

Can someone please take a quick look and see if there is a Greek Orthodox church in Costa Rica

Either that or you might want to contact the Greek Embassy in Costa Rica and ask them…

Where you will live in Costa Rica is an important factor in your decision to buy a diesel or gasoline vehicle. I live on the South Pacific coast in a small town and a 4 wheel drive vehicle is a must here. The lower cost of diesel plus the durability of the diesel engine makes it the logical choice for my location. I usually drive short distances and am frequently in 1st or 2nd gear and often in 4wd. Even if the regular gas prices are reduced and the diesel prices increase, the diesel will still be cheaper and over time you can save considerably with even a small difference in price. And, as was noted in another post, the diesel is more durable and usually requires much less maintenance than a gas powered vehicle.

I would be more diplomatic and suggest that the project name was somewhat “short-sighted” but yes! Never in a million years would I admit to owning a home in a project called “The Color of the Money Estates”

But look at the bright side! The burglars in Costa Rica no longer have to think about which project to target, that decision ahs been made for them here.

What a magnificent and rewarding idea!

Do you know if they can help with accommodation for people who wish to volunteer and work there for free?

Do they have articles that we could feature on this site to try and drum up some donations for them? (Can’t promise anything but we can try…)
