I had a very enjoyable lunch this week with Bay Igleheart of http://www.vayacongaia.org and we hope to feature more articles about “ecological building solutions” in the very near future.

Diesel is cheaper in Costa Rica and a diesel engine would be able to accept some of the biofuels that are being developed.

    Hi Gareth

I’m from the UK too and would ask you to remember that the government of Costa Rica decided some time ago that foreigners cannot just step off the plane in Costa Rica as a tourist and try to find work for four months. That’s ILLEGAL!

To work here legally you would have to have the correct immigration status which would A: Take a very long time and B: Probably cost you more money than you would make in four months and lastly, unless you are affiliated with some officially approved part-time program, that would not be possible for a part-time position.

Of course there are people that work here illegally but if you are caught, you could face some seriously embarassing moments he said diplomatically.

That’s the bad news, the good news is that the beer is very, very cheap here compared to the UK.

Sorry but your posting entitled ‘lot prices’ is extremely confusing and you’re going to have to be a LOT more specific about this…

This is a Discussion Forum so please tell us! What is it exactly that you want to discuss?

Have you not been here before Marcia?

The only time I get been bitten by mosquitoes is when I have visited the beach areas, there are very few bugs in and around San Jose that will bite you.

I am not exaggerating when I say that I get bitten a HUNDRED times more by bugs in upstate New York and in Scotland when I am there for a few weeks than I have been bitten in all of my seven years in Costa Rica.

May I suggest that you visit Costa Rica first and take a good look around before deciding to live here.

PS. As a child I grew up in Africa and the critters that bite you there are positively carnivorous in comparison with what we experience here.

I appreciate your “update” but there’s actually no real news here is there? And no facts? And certainly no proof.

I am sure that what you have “heard” sounds very interesting and some “signs” are there but until you can give us news from an authoritative source – there is indeed MUCH doubt that a new international airport is “actually happening.”

Please give me the folio real number of the land that has been supposedly purchased for the airport and also by Barcelo and I will have my attorneys look into it for our VIP Members.

Thank you for your feedback Marcia

As we saw from this thread, most of us do genuinely want to help people but some people don’t want to be helped.

Why would we need window screens?

And most apartments that rent for $500-$600 absolutely DO have running water.

    ldordal has been ‘unsubscribed’ permamnently…

It’s a shame that the very astute advice given to ldordal by our VIP Members was taken the wrong way. Sometimes when people don’t hear what they want to hear they get defensive or, in this case offensive.

This beautiful little big country is not for everyone and, from this discussion thread, it would appear that Costa Rica is not for ldordal either.

My apologies for not “moderating” earlier but we had one of those ‘unannounced’ power cuts for a good portion of the day which is also why the newsletter didn’t go out….

in reply to: How does one celebrate Christmas in CR? #180025

    Buenas tardes George

As you know, Costa Rica is predominantly a Catholic country and most non-tourist related businesses will come to a screeching halt on Friday the 15th December to begin the celebration of Christmas.

The ‘green season’ or ‘rainy season’ is coming to an end, the weather is windy and cool (for Costa Rica) in the Central Valley and families are planning their traditional family dinner to be held on Christmas Eve.

Although people will claim that everything is back to normal by the 6th January, the truth is that it’s the week after before anyone is seriously thinking about work…

For most holidays, a leg of pork is the choice of meat and will be accompanied by ‘tamales’ made from corn flour dough and stuffed with potatoes, vegetables, pork or chicken. This mix is then wrapped in the green leaves of the plantain and boiled.

The whole process of making the ‘tamales’ is a very traditional one, many members of the family are expected to help prepare the food and each family will have their own ‘twist’ on the traditional recipe.

    It’s also beach time…

Many Costa Ricans will planning their trip to the beach sometime after Christmas to soak up the sun after the ‘green season.’

From Christmas to just after New Year, the roads to the Pacific are jam packed.

And don’t forget! We don’t say ‘Merry Christmas” to the Ticos, we say ‘Feliz Navidad’! And Happy New Year is ‘Feliz Año Nuevo.’

Have you already checked the title of the property that you are buying?

Unless it’s specified in writing today and not some ‘to be determined’ date in the future, I would suggest that you can not be sure of anything.

I don’t think you can get anywhere for 15 colones which is about US$0.02 cents, the buses that travel from Santa Ana into San Jose all day long charge 205 colones which is about US$0.40 cents.

That “offending scene” you refer to is truly obscene and makes me bloody angry but, when you consider the overall situation, it’s the Gringo that’s acting like a prehistoric man, not the humble supermarket bagger.

Unfortunately there are many people who consider themselves superior to others simply because they have more dollars in their bank account than others. The possibility that they might be culturally, morally and intellectually inferior and in this case, incredibly ignorant never occurs to them…

I share your concern and like you, hope that that is not the kind of person – Gringo or otherwise – that is now coming to Costa Rica.
