May 13, 2015 at 9:46 pm in reply to: Costa Rica’s New International Airport Is NOT Going To Happen! #200115AndrewKeymaster
The geniuses over at La Republica newspaper published an article on the 11th May entitled: Es tiempo de planificar aeropuerto de Orotina (It’s time to plan the Orotina airport)
They’re probably correct if by “it’s time to plan” means we should start planning it now and have it ready by 2050 but, as usual the authors give us NO IDEAS whatsoever how little old Costa Rica would come up with the BILLIONS of dollars required.
La Republica refers to the cost of new Denver airport in the USA ($4.8 BILLION) and the new Istanbul, Turkey airport ($5.6 BILLION)
May 11, 2015 at 10:20 pm in reply to: Cost for a caretaker per month and pool expenses in particular #163719AndrewKeymasterYou can see the 2015 minimum salaries by downloading this from my Download Library here.
The minimum salary for a Gardener would be c10,531.09 per day which at 526:$1 works out to about $20. Add about 40% more ($8) for the various social contributions and you get about $28 per day…
If I were you, I would NOT have anyone living on my property unless 1. I knew them extremely well and B. I had a rock solid written agreement with them.
Your land and construction costs will vary dramatically between Arenal, Manuel Antonio and the southern zone (Ojochal, Uvita, etc.).

AndrewKeymasterI honestly don’t know all the details but ‘if’ I understand it correctly, the developer sued the bank because the bank reneged on the terms of the financing when the real estate market started turning around and then the bank sued the developer and then the bank sued the other banks involved…
A complete mess….
AndrewKeymaster
Do most expats here have cars?
I’ve read in a book written book by an expat that cars in CR oost twice as much to buy in CR than in the US.
So, I can’t imagine that shipping and taxes are quite that expensive so why not just ship a newer car?
What am I missing?
Also, if people live close to town in their chosen community, why not buy an ATV to go to the grocery store and into town?
Is an ATV not affordable?
And then rent a car, etc., when travelling greater distances?
What I understand is that vehicles with a great suspension are most important and cost of gas is important also.
What am I missing?
This is Costa Rica!
Always try to imagine the unimaginable and, you should certainly always expect the unexpected!
April 18, 2015 at 10:43 pm in reply to: Article on a proposed gag law? Political climate in CR #171031AndrewKeymasterAnybody have any idea what the Tico Times is talking about when they use the Shylockian term:
“But one resignation was not enough to make a pound of flesh.”
Huh?
Scott
AndrewKeymasterI think it’s common knowledge that Ticos like to travel but get homesick quickly…
Having said that I really don’t think we can honestly say that this or 99.9% of countries out there are “governed wisely!”
I’m in Madrid today and will fly back to Costa Rica tomorrow…

AndrewKeymasterThank you Bill… What a lovely thing to say.
I should have come up with a better headline but I hadn’t slept for two days by that point and was a wee bit tired.
Dad’s funeral is next Thursday (with the Easter break this was the earliest time available) so I’ll probably be back in Costa Rica the following week.
It’s obviously not a ‘happy’ time but it has been great to visit family and friends and enjoy a few pints of ale.

AndrewKeymasterHumans who regularly walk on the grass/earth with bare feet and are therefore truly connected with Mother Nature also feel this but ‘modern man’ has lost the ability to ‘connect’ with Mother Nature which is just one of the many reasons why we are blindly destroying our home…
Dontcha’ think?

AndrewKeymasterGetting this information on the telephone is not easy.
I just called CIMA for you and got the run around for ten minutes and nobody was even willing to give me a ‘range of prices’ for an MRI.
For two years I had CostaRicaHospital.com with a U.S. Registered Nurse and this ‘poor communications’ was the main reason I got out of the medical tourism business.
When you find out the prices, please do report back and let us know …

AndrewKeymasterThis was posted by CHERYLJK in the wrong place and is reposted here by Scott:
This isn’t a new topic but one that was posted not that long ago. But of course I can’t find it due to my terrible computer skills. Anyway, I posted that you can get health insurance if you are 70 or over, and others contradicted me. I now have some clarification.
If you are a member of ARCR, you can get insurance at age 70 or older. This is according to Juan Calero, phone #506-2258-7041. His email is jcalero@pricose.com.
My husband and I had a meeting with him this afternoon to talk about insurance, so I posed the question to him. He said it is only by ARCR affiliation that you can get insurance through his office. So I thought that was good news to share.
AndrewKeymasterPlease try the links again rccrain
But important to remember that these articles are very old so this information could be very wrong by now…
Please consult with an expert about any changes that may have taken place.

AndrewKeymaster
BTW, did you ever get to make a video of the Febrero home show? PEH
Sorry pharg! I meant to respond to this…
I started making a very simple video about that Home/Construction show ‘for fun’ one Sunday and before I knew it, I had spent 2.5 hours on this simple video, it was still not finished and I saved the video file (Using Camtasia) to finish up on Monday…
Of course on Monday when I tried to open up the file to finish it, the file was somehow corrupted and refused to open and I simply haven’t had the time to redo it…
The #1 problem with video is the time it takes…
Filming is actually the easy part.
Simple editing typically takes one hour for every minute of video so a 5 minute video could have taken FIVE HOURS of editing plus the filming and the time it takes to travel to and from the location.
And, as they say: “Time is money!”

AndrewKeymasterThank you very much for your feedback.
It’s the first ‘off-the-cuff’ version so hopefully – for your sake 😕 – I’ll get better at it …
For those of you who have no bloody idea what we’re talking about, we are talking about this:
