Plus ‘unknown’ health hazards, to this day we don’t know what killed the most perfect little dog I’ve ever had – Daisy – an Australian terrier.
We’re guessing it was some kind of a poisonous frog or toad….

AndrewKeymasterI ‘think’ my insurance guy has a Lloyds of London policy for those up to the age of 74 but I’ll try and confirm that for you and will respond again here…

AndrewKeymasterGeorge Lundquist is still very active…
AndrewKeymasterCongratulations on thinking this through…
My comments below are in italics…
1 – “Something rustic but pretty, lots of natural woods, etc., probably about 1500 square feet” should certainly not cost more than $100 per square foot.
Land costs obviously vary widely depending on the area… And yes! Buying land “that already has electric and septic or some water system already in place” is a sensible idea…
2 – $200K is the number for the ‘inversionista’ residency status but, as CostaRicaFinca has pointed out “the property required for residency purposes must be in the National Registry valued at least $200K” so the renovation idea may not work for you …
3 – I did read in the forum here that I build a house, land costs do not count toward the $200K. Does that sound right? I believe that is correct!
4 – And until I’m a resident, I need to travel in and out of Costa Rica every three months? So this could include visits to Nicaragua, Panama and the US? I expect to have my son with me for a couple years and he will be 18 so the same is required of him? Yes! He will be required to follow the same steps as you although I am not certain whether an 18 year old can be your dependent, you would need to verify that…
5 – If I have $ to last me 15-16 years (assuming I have no debt and my house in Costa Rica is paid for), plus gain social security well before that, am I wrong in assuming I’ll be ok with residency with enough passage of time? It sounds great to me but if this is a solid, income that can be easily verified then you might want to consider ‘pensionado’ status (I have no idea how old you are) instead of ‘inversionista’ which would probably save you thousands a year just in CAJA payments…
6 – I’ve been to CR five times and will go back again by the end of the year. My plan is to choose my three favorite places and then live in each of them for three months, then choose the one I most like and spend another 6-9 months before buying property/a home. I’ll rent during this time. Any thoughts on this? This is what everybody should do….
Hope that helps….

AndrewKeymasterSpanish speakers can read the La Nacion article about Ryan Piercy here.
Must confess that it’s a strange story and now a well publicized international incident with many unanswered questions and, I hope for his family’s sake that this has a happy conclusion and that the police are able to round up and convict the guilty parties otherwise, we could see some copycats coming along which really would be catastrophic.

AndrewKeymaster
Seems to me President Solis is doing what any good leader should do – exploring every opportunity to improve the well-being of his people. Those who are inclined to always see something sinister wherever they look will act true to form.
The Chinese are doing nothing different than the British, French, Dutch, Americans and every other country that wanted to promote their business interests have historically done.
It’s only my opinion but if I may point out one fairly significant difference sweikert925.
In promoting their ‘business interests’ the British, French, Dutch, Americans have killed a LOT more people than the Chinese ever have trying to promote their ‘business interests’, don’t you think?

AndrewKeymasterPlease allow me to make a couple of observations here based on your comments:
1. dbserv:
Playa Azul may indeed be “charming, local, friendly, safe and relaxed” however it’s also a little remote so even though you may have a lovely home in a beautiful area naturally it will be more difficult and time consuming for any Realtor to cover.
The real estate market in Costa Rica has improved significantly in 2015 however, overall interest in this little country has declined as is apparent when you look at Google Trends.
This chart below shows the global activity for people searching for ‘Costa Rica real estate for sale’.
As you can clearly see, overall activity is lower than it has been in ten years.

Having said that, you only need one serious buyer – someone similar to yourselves who sees the beauty of the area – in order to sell your home, right?
Can you not use the same Realtor who sold you the home in the first place?

There are indeed Realtors here in Costa Rica, although not many. Most of them, are ‘real estate agents’ and not Realtors and although your experience may differ, all of the ‘Realtors’ I recommend on this site are “honest and hard working.”
There are a couple of different Multiple Listing Systems here but the vast majority of real estate sales people simply aren’t interested in them.
You can’t blame Realtors for charging a tax that the government requires them to collect.

February 19, 2015 at 4:05 pm in reply to: Costa Rica’s Central Bank to allow controlled flotation of the US$:Colon #163252AndrewKeymasterAccording to the Dollar Times $250 in 1979 would be worth $860.59 today and I don’t suppose that’s going to “pad your retirement” too much either, maybe for a month!

AndrewKeymasterDon’t know if you guys saw this….
Costa Rica Not Banning GM Crops
Although some sectors anticipated approval of the initiative by the Commission on GM crops, most of the deputies in the Agricultural Affairs Committee rejected it, burying the law that would have banned GM cultivation in the country for four years…

AndrewKeymasterThere has been more news but I am really uncomfortable posting this here while this is an ongoing investigation.
