I’d like to add a recommendation for George Lundquist’s tour — we took it before we moved here three years ago and found it TOTALLY worth it, and then some! I second Steve’s suggestion: check it out.
–arden–ardenbrinkMemberYes, there is DEFINITELY duty on motorcycles, although it is true that the percentage(s) are different (and a bit less) than on cars. If you follow Scott’s suggestion and send me an email, I can certainly tell you more!
Thanks.
–arden–ardenbrinkMemberHi everyone,
Arden at Ship Costa Rica here — sorry about the confusion and problems getting in touch. We ran into some trouble with our website guy and had to change over our hosting and email and the whole nightmarish process took much longer than we’d hoped. We’re back up and running just fine now with the website and emails.
Dominique — I had answered you at the time of your inquiry last month so don’t know why you wouldn’t have gotten that. I’ll go back right now into my files and send it again. I’ve had this happen a few times before so maybe the old email server was more likely to get shunted off into junk or bulk mail? (Dunno, just guessing.) Anyway, we’re still here and certainly would be glad to help with your shipping.
Thanks!
Arden Rembert Brink, Ship Costa RicaardenbrinkMemberAlso, David Rushton, thanks for the suggestion on the outgoing phone message. I’ve asked Barry to change those! Excellent idea.
–arden–ardenbrinkMemberHi — Arden Brink here again. The site is working and theoretically the email should be working fine, too. But I will admit that when *I* test it, I get varied results. So I’m working to chase it down with our website guy. In the meantime, please note that we’re always reachable through shipping@welovecostarica.com and with the phone numbers 22.32.57.24 in CR and 843.278.5573 from the U.S. Sorry for the communications challenges! 😉
ardenbrinkMemberI think we’ve solved David Rushton’s communications problem, but for anyone else who might be wondering — Ship Costa Rica had a brief but unfortunate outage on our website and email addresses yesterday and today. It has been resolved now and the webpage at http://www.shipcostarica.com is working (with the email link there) as well as any of the “@shipcostarica.com” email addresses. Another great way to get in touch in read the article(s) we’ve published here on WLCR. There’s always a link at the bottom of those articles.

Ship Costa RicaardenbrinkMemberLike Jo, we have tile on the first floor and wood on the 2nd (and 3rd) where the same layer of wood is both the floor and the ceiling of the room below. That seems like a really good “middle ground” where your ground floor is thoroughly “sealed up” but you get the cost savings and beauty of wood elsewhere. We don’t have any trouble with warping or mushrooms or anything like that.
Good luck, whichever way you go.
–arden–ardenbrinkMemberFor the past couple of years we’ve had quite adequate DSL in San Ramon, but once we moved (recently) out to Magallanes, a few kilometers out of town, that was no longer available. We have the WiMax service that was referred to (at Ben Cart’s house) and have been happy overall. It seems very fast and has been very reliable where we are. As has been noted, though, it is a “line of sight” process so your service is VERY dependent on exactly where you live and where it is installed. We’ve had almost none of the minor temporary outages we used to have occasionally on the DSL, but we have had two occasions in the past 6 weeks or so where it was down for half a day or so. An annoying inconvenience in my business, maybe an unacceptable one in yours.
I’ve copied their contact info below from a recent email they’d sent us. Karla is the “office person” and is probably a reasonable person to talk with if you want more info:

Magallanes (San Ramon)ardenbrinkMemberHi, SusanC.,
I am the person that wrote the article you refer to about shipping cars and I’m the one who receives the inquiries. Although I can’t be completely certain (since your email doesn’t show here on the WLCR forum and I only have the “SusanC” login name to go by) I am pretty sure I haven’t received any inquiry from you. We get quite a number of inquiries from our articles on WLCR and I have answered all that I’ve received.
So, yes, indeed it *is* possible that your emails are being caught up in a spam filter. These days it happens a lot and is usually pretty much out of control of us, the end user. (The filters are often set up on the “ISP” or “email server” end of things.) I’m awfully sorry that you’ve been waiting around without a response. If you email me directly at shipping@welovecostarica.com I can answer other questions.
For now – your questions posted here:
1. No the cars do not need to be drained of all fluids, although they should only have about 1/8 of a tank of gas. Often you will also be advised to disconnect the battery.
2. If your car is going to be shipped *in* a container you can pack things inside it. If it is being shipped directly, on its own, you can’t.
3. If you are going to use the original cartons (which is certainly a good idea if you have them since they’ll have the foam insets) you have two good options. One is to cut the cartons open and essentially turn them “inside out” and re-tape them. This isn’t as hard as it sounds and is best of all since you still have the proper sized box that is now plain cardboard. The other, also fine and certainly easier, method is to spray paint “used” in large letters over the sides. If customs chooses to, they can determine age of electronics by serial numbers, but that’s not typically a problem.
4. The nominal dimensions of a container are 8′ x 8′ x either 20′ or 40′. In actuality it’s closer to 7’8″ W and 7’10” high, losing maybe 6″ of length (so 19’6″ or 39′ 6″). One of the best and simplest things is to save your bed mattresses until last and put them on either side of the car for side-ways padding. You’ll also want to chock the tires and it doesn’t hurt to tie it off to the sides either.
As I say, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with more questions. Hope that helped.
best,
Arden Rembert Brink
ardenbrinkMemberWhen we moved here in ’06, my parents moved with us and my dad had Parkinson’s. (He has since passed of other things.) We found the care to be excellent and the meds overall easy to find. Sinemet is readily available in a couple of different dosages as is PK Merz which were the main things we used. Although Daddy was no longer taking Mirapex, I’m almost sure it’s available here as well. We live in San Ramon and used a *wonderful* gerontologist in nearby Palmares who also was the first doctor in 10 years of treating his Parkinson’s to suggest he needed an MRI or CAT scan to effectively determine whether he really had Parkinson’s. As it turned out, while he probably did have Parkinson’s, many of his symptoms, possibly for the past several years, were due to a brain condition (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus) whose symptoms, in fact, hugely mimic Parkinson’s. All his very well-respected, top-notch neurologists in the states had done over the years was increase his meds. We had brain surgery right here in CR — private pay, less than $10k for two separate brain surgeries and two separate private hospital stays — with outstanding quality of care. (Sorry, I realize that’s slightly off-topic from the Parkinson’s but still might be of interest.)
Hope that helps.
