We have gone to Cima and Hospital Biblica. My husband was in Biblica for Dengue. They are excellent and some of the same drs at biblica and cima practice at both. I have had a lot of testing at cima and the specialists are there for all kinds of specialties. You will find that time with patients is not cut short at all. I have been told that biblica is less expensive by several people don’t know if that is a fact because I have never compared pricing.

for the most part they represent themselves. there are not any laws or licensing requirements that specify loyalty to anyone. I sold real estate for over 20 years in the states and can say buyer beware

When we received our almost two years ago it was 1000 for both of us and you have to pay caja every month. you renew every two years. we used an attorney. we had to go to the U.S. embassy and have them draft a certified letter for each of us showing our income from social security. I think you have to make an appointment for that certification, might as well wait until 2014. Keep in mind that in costa rica they never used to get anything done in the government for December and January because of vacations for holidays. so check on that too.

I was a licensed broker in the states. My advice is to be very careful. Licensing is not required here, education is not required, etc. Attorneys should also be by recommendation. Because you are in the industry you should be able to judge the quality and honesty of the person you decide to work with. Good luck, Costa Rica is a great place to live. We have lived in the Central Pacific for 4 years and it is warm and humid.
I believe that welovecostarica.com published a list with climate averages for different parts of the country.

] We only went to san jose for our residency card. everything else was done in Jaco. Social Security officem Clinic. Costa Rica is an interesting country, things vary from place to place, as in Jaco. Again the gold card, not to be confused with your residency, is available at the social security office

I forgot, initially you go to a social security office, seguro, they have you fill out the paperwork and tell you what your monthly fee will be for coverage. I did not think about the initial application. I believe you have to make an appointment at social security too, our office in jaco is next to banc of costa rica on the north end of town by the bus station. the other thing is in costa rica they change procedure from time to time. also if you are 65 you can get a pensionado card that gives you discounts on services including ten per cent off at CIMA. it is a gold card, also gives you free entry to the national parks and a discount on the bus.

it depends on what area you are in. you regularly are assigned to a location near where you live. and yes you make an appointment for your first initial meeting with the dr. then you can put yourself on 3 month appointments if you ask for it. we are in Jaco and our clinic is kind of across from the post office near where the fruit market is on Friday. For emergencies you just go there with your card showing you are current on your caja payments,

we are retired and have humana advantage as part of our medicare.we have our residency. I just mentioned the insurance because if you are American and have coverage you might be covered for emergencies.

You can use the private hospitals here with cash or credit card even if you have caja. You will get a ten percent discount if you get your pensionado(gold) card from costa ricas social security. just make sure you show it. by the way the gold card is free, free entry in national parks, etc.

Check with your insurance from the states about emergencies.

My husband had dengue last year and was admitted as an emergency to Clinica Biblica in san jose. they require a deposit, you can use your credit card. If you don’t use the full amount they refund the difference.,there is some time before you are credited on your card if I remember right.

We have Humana and because it was an emergency we got the necessary paperwork from Humana and submitted the claim. It took probably three months for approval for an emergency.

Humana paid everything except the drugs that were used because they were foreign. the bill was 1500 for either 2 or three days with a private room for his care for Dengue. I think they required 3000 or 3500 on your credit card for admittance.

A friend of mine had Blue Cross and was reimbursed for an emergency also. Caja does not cover any private hospital to my knowledge. the private hospitals are terrific.

their care and concern was surprising because as a foreigner you never know if you have not been there before.

scott, is it true that you cannot open a bank account or obtain a drivers license without residency if you are a foreigner

I have heard that you have to have residency to open a bank account herein costa rica. I don’t know if the changes are still there. used to be able to open an account with your passport, but costa rica stopped allowing bank accounts and drivers licenses. Opening an account was never easy. there is a checklist that tells you the items you need

crsam of wheat if you can find it, I think there is a costa rican version but don’t know the name in Spanish. wherever you see ants coming from just put about a teaspoon or tablespoon, a small mound…the ants eat it, the moisture in their bodies make them blow up or expand. found it on a show in Arizona and it works on small ants. it is organic and cheap

I forgot the reason we moved…visits here showed a great lifestyle, expenses were less than the states for the most part if you live like a Costa Rican.
