I’m 63 1/2 & can retire on my full SS of ~$2,000/month,in 2 1/2 years.I was born in Galveston & love the Texas coast, except for the oppressive heat & humidity & mosquitos. Is there somewhere in CR I can live up high enough to be comfortable during the day,yet w/in short driving distance to the coast where I can pursue my main love of nearshore kayak & small-boat fishing?I don’t want to have to spend my mid-days indoors in A/C if I can avoid it.I’m planning a trip down there in 3-4 months & would appreciate any suggestions as to where I should visit. I don’t care about night life or beaches .
Hi Doc,
My wife and I have property in Platanillo which is in the mountains and a 15 minute drive from the Dominical beaches. It’s an ideal location because of it’s great roads, close proximity to the beach AND San Isidro which is 35 minutes away. We’ve built a small home there and don’t need AC, unlike at the beach, due to the altitude. We’re planning to move there full time within 2 years. I’m an also avid sea kayak fisherman. We LOVE to talk about our favorite place in the world!
Best,
Len & Vani Greene
Hi Len, I too am interested in the Platanillo area. On on last visit I started in Jaco and worked my way south of Uvita. I liked the area but the beaches were a bit rough for me. Did I miss any that are good for just layed back swimming? And from Platanillo where would you go for good medical care? San Isidro?
I hope to retire in CR in less than a year, will take my SS early!
BillbloucasMemberWow that sure beats the drive I had this past June. Where have they completed up to? Or where is there still the dirt road? Are there still any single lane bridges?
BillbloucasMemberThanks everyone….all good info
bloucasMemberThanks Scott, I can see that. It does look like one can get off and cut over to the airport. Should save some time but not sure how much if we have to go to Caldera since we are heading south to Esterillos Oste and then Dominical. The good news is we will be starting in SJ since we will attend a ARCR mtg 1st.
BillbloucasMemberI was there in June and we used Enterprise. They were a good price and good to deal with. We had a problem with the vehicle and they sent someone down from SJ to Quepos to swap them out. Pouring rain (of course) and after dark.
bloucasMemberThanks James. Was it difficult to find the bus terminal in SJ? Do you recall the bus company and if it was air conditioned? I’ve gotten conflicting reports on how good or bad these busses are.
We’ll need a car eventually so we can meet with realtors and look at homes while we’re there. Hopefully we can p/u a car in San Isidro and drop it off in Jaco or SJ airport. We’re hoping the new toll road is open by end of Mar.bloucasMemberD~Your property in Ostional sounds beautiful. What are the downsides? I would love to build my own home but I’ve done it before and know the frustrations and that was in San Diego (Julian). Like you, we plan to rent and travel for awhile before deciding where to finally settle.
Look forward to talking with you sometime.
~BbloucasMemberThanks for all the input 2BNCR. I have heard about the dust so I guess nothing is perfect. There’s always a trade off somewhere. I was there (Jaco, Quepos,Dominical, etc) in June and although it was warm and humid I did not find it over bearing. Maybe on my next visit I’ll visit the northern beaches.
I’m looking for a nice quiet area close to the beach (view would be nice) and still close enough to some decent supermarkets. Jaco way too crowded for me. I also want to check out the area between San Isidro and Dominical.
~BbloucasMemberYes excellent info….thanks.
So why did you choose Guanacaste? My understanding is that it is very dry. Is it the surf that got you?
My last and only visit (in June)was to Jaco, Quepos, Dominical, Uvita and a bit south. I like Uvita and also Playa Hermosa (Esterillos) just south of Jaco. I understand your comment about FL. It can be pretty hot and humid there, can’t imagine it would be worse on the CR coast. Going back sometime soon to attend an ARCR mtg and hope to move down in about a yr.My wife and I will be retired so looking for an area close to the beach and still a good value. If you have any input on the southern region it would be welcome.bloucasMemberDid you send anything yet?
bloucasMemberDenise, can you meet me on the ARCR site?
BillbloucasMemberHey cool, I’ll shoot you an email but what’s your name? What is your move status? Are you planning to relocate soon? We’re still working on our papers and now shooting for Oct 2010 to coincide with pension.
Denise, I guess this answers your question.
BillbloucasMemberHi Denise. I’d love to chat with you sometime and compare notes. My fiance and I are targeting sometime around June~Oct next yr. Depends on pensions etc and what the CR immigration will accept (hers kicks in before mine but not sure if they’ll accept hers) I’m in La Costa and you?
Have you started any of the process? Do you have a favorite area yet?
BillbloucasMemberThanks for the clarification Scott. I wrote in haste and realize you didn’t write the article. Having been to the west (Jaco to Uvita)this past June, I found it warm but not undesirable. Of course I’m a little spoiled living in San Diego. I plan to retire in CR in a yr or 2 and am considering all beach areas.
Love your web site.
BillbloucasMemberThanks David, we have been in touch with a CR attorney and he was very helpful. Problem is we are getting mixed msgs. Some say need certified naturalization doc and authenticated birth cert. and the CR consulate was not clear on that. RE: Mexican birth cert.- Mexican counsulate knows nothing about authenticating the birth cert. but offered to supply a copy (and we have the original so no need) We will have to go to Tijuana (counsulate)in person to get answers.
